I think the chicory used in coffee is different from this type of chicory. As I recall it is a taller plant with little blue flowers and it is the root that is dried and ground to add to the coffee. In addition to whatever was in the coffee, it seemed to me that the chicory had a medicinal effect that precipitated a situational response that carried quite a sense of urgency in the morning. I drink Community Coffee these days, with chicory, and have no issues with irregularity.
I tried to grow some of that kind of chicory years ago but failed. Supposedly it grows wild in some places.

Chicory is working out well for winter salads, freshly picked and thats' after quite a few serious frosts up to -5C, totally unprotected outside. The castelfranco is starting to develop some quite pretty pink splotches. Which variety of castelfranco I'm afraid i don't know but could find out if i search through my records, came to me thanks to some free plants via the chicoryweek people.
Here's a good description of the difference between chicory and radicchio and the different types available www.chicoryweek.com/radicchiogallery

The colors on that plate are beautiful. davidjp, Who wouldn't want to have a serving of those staring up at them?! and I love the markings on the castelfranco.

Well I think I'm at the end of my chicory trial this year. Pretty much picked the remainder for this season, starting to look a bit worse for wear due to the rain and frost. I've been pretty happy with the results, hasn't been nearly as bitter as I thought it might be. The salad made almost entirely of radicchio leaves was perfectly nice with a really good flavor. I'll probably increase my plantings next year, I think I could, if I had enough, be providing salad into the new year. They seem very cold hardy. Plus they look pretty which is always a plus in the garden. Next year I'll branch out, get a few different varieties and types to try , there's no shortage of those (47 alone in the Franchi catalog)

I considered trying radicchio this year and then read about the bitterness and changed my mind. Perhaps next year as that salad with the cauliflower and apple sounds delicious!
