Despite this being tax season, I’ve just become so excited with the discovery that a few local communities and a neighboring county are supporting rain gardens! The county will even help residents create their own Rain Gardens. That’s SO ENCOURAGING, especially in the face of other communities (such as mine) which really don’t understand gardening beyond putting landscape shrubs in for “beautification purposes”.
Wouldn’t it be wonderful if a Rain Garden movement could be created to gently educate people on the value of utilizing the rain in an alternative way, as opposed to controlling nature and gardening by the use of citations?? Has anyone ever worked with their community to create a Rain Garden?
Soooo, naturally I want to create my own Rain Garden. I’m thinking small little depressions periodically through the larger yard, as test sites as well as to add some drama to the garden. I might even bury my compost beneath the excavations before planting to hide it from the prying eyes of neighbors and code enforcement officers with their always handy citation pads.
The photo which prompted this excitement was in an e-mail from VanBourgondien which sells plants on retail and wholesale basis. I’ve purchased from them quite frequently in the past. ( I would copy it but can't get back into my e-mail now - not unusual with Comcast)
I was thinking how nice it would be to have rain bells in each of the little Rain Gardens, but we had a discussion of the copper rain bells either on the old OG Forum or on another DIY forum I liked which also closed in favor of sending its participating members to the so-called social media site. I recall that copper bells might not be suitable because of the desire of some thieves to steal the copper.
I’ve also been fond of those little bridges in Japanese gardens and think it would be nice to create one for a larger Rain Garden. Has anyone ever done this? Making a bridge probably wouldn’t be on the building list for this year though.
Does anyone have a Rain Garden? How large is it, how deep did you excavate, and does it channel storm water off in a manner that still leaves adequate rainfall for the other beds? What plants have you put in it? Any other thoughts or suggestions? I'd love to hear of your experiences and suggestions!
