Memories... We were gifted a nice bush that did well for a few years, then suddenly gave out. Oh, the scent of the very few, chocolate-brown, little-bitty flowers would sweep you off your feet. It's endangered now, and not generally available. Sure would like to try again.

Mine seem to last forever. They thrive on neglect. Except for getting morning glory vines out of them, I do nothing for them.

This and the lilac are my two favorite shrubs. My grandmother and great grandmother both had one and I believe theyโre still going. When I moved here many, many years ago, I went out on the porch on a nice warm day and caught the scent of one. Twenty minutes later I found it down over the hill and through the briars. About a month ago I went to see if it was still there and not only is it there, but it has spread! Unfortunately the buds of it and the lilacs were bit by the late freezes we had this year.

I remember it from my younger days as well, on my uncle's farm. I always heard then that many early teas, tonics, and soft drinks (including Dr. Pepper) were originally flavored with an extact of sweetbush.
