deckman22 I always start my EP seeds on a heat mat, about 6 weeks before transplant, which I do about a week to 10 days after the tomatoes (and the peppers one week later than these), as they don't like the cool weather. And, while they do well, once it gets warm out, like tomatoes, many, if not most, don't like it really hot, and drop blossoms when it gets into the high 90s, and don't start up again, until it gets cooler, just like tomatoes. Ichiban is a variety that I grow every year, because it is always the first variety to produce! It is not heat resistant, but worth it, to get those early eggplants. Hari - a green Indian variety - is the most heat resistant variety I have grown, producing through 100+ days, one summer. Neon was close, but not quite as resistant (can't be found anywhere now, so I'm growing some saved seeds this season, even though it was listed as a hybrid...we'll see what happens). I was surprised that some varieties from Thailand, Malaysia, and other tropical areas, had this same problem with heat. It couldn't be hotter in NJ!
