Daughter tells me that they found a rabbit in the area of her yard, head and hind legs were missing. They had been in the area about twenty minutes earlier and the rabbit was not there at that time. They are located in northern Florida and she tells me that there is housing construction not far away. I assume animals are being displaced.
so, what critter would kill a rabbit in this fashion and leave the main body?

Maybe an animal that likes dark meat?

Maybe the hunter was interrupted during his feed and was scared away. Maybe a large bird?

Maybe a weasel member or fox?

Could be an owl. They eat the head first.

If it was after dark I'd also vote for an owl, but during daylight hours it could be a hawk. While they'll pretty much eat the entire animal, if the animal was too large or heavy for them to carry off & they were disturbed, they may have had no choice but to leave what was left. We once saw a small hawk catch & start to devour a Bluejay in our driveway, & as we were driving by it couldn't hoist the bird (which was almost as large as the hawk) off the ground, so flew off without it.
A fox or similar predator would most likely have carried the rabbit off to enjoy in a more secluded spot.

The legendary chupacabra was supposed to suck the blood, not eat the head. Maybe it's a chupacabeza.

octave1, thatβs not a comforting thought . Daughter says their back yard is fenced, but there is a video clip out there of a gator going over a chain link fence.

Had a headless rabbit carcass show up one morning, under the trees along the garden path. I figured that the culprit was an owl. Or maybe a chupacabeza del conejo. It was unusual.

I figured that the culprit was an owl. Does an owl take his prey to a tree or does it find a quiet spot on the ground?

Does an owl take his prey to a tree or does it find a quiet spot on the ground? Judging from chickens I've lost, the owl eats it on the ground where it finds it. The chickens were not removed to trees.
