I am trying to figure out what to do with the mums I just bought. I had planned on using them in my autumn decorations around the corn stalks and pumpkins from the garden. I am getting confused about what to do with them. I am guessing that these are annuals but I want to put them in the ground til frost. I don't have the luxury of bringing them in as I have no place to overwinter anything. Try as I might I am not yet successful with anything. So the articles I have seen have not been helpful for my purposes. I have tried in the past to plant in the ground but they died. I know frost will kill them but I thought I might cover them for the time being when frost is expected. Should I put them in the ground with a little fertilizer or in pots anyway?

I've had great success with a potted mum someone brought me 2 years ago (my guess is that it was from a grocery store). Stuck it in the ground along a south facing wall. Each year it has gotten bigger. I don't cover it over the winter but I do mulch the soil 2-3 inches. A frost will put it to sleep but shouldn't kill the roots. At least in my experience, lilolpeapicker,

lilolpeapicker, Did your mums have an info tag included in the pot? I purchased a couple of mums two years ago. They are against the barn foundation, south side, well mulched, and have survived two Iowa winters. I researched the info from the tag and felt they might survive. Good luck.

I get mums from the $1-5 rack at Lowes. Plant here and there in the front bed. All the leaves from the street trees blow there in the fall and I just leave them as mulch. Forget they are there until they explode into flower in the fall every year.

Mumsey, would love some of those marigold seeds. Just a pinch will do. If you need my address again, let me know.

James, What color are your hibiscus blooms? Are the leaves lighter green or on the reddish side?

Dead-headed a bunch of spent hydrangea blooms, both brown and green, for fall dry arrangements to-day.

lilolpeapicker, What did you decide about your mums? Are they in the ground or in a fall arrangement in your front yard?

I am starting to think about more flowers for next year. Had my backyard cleaned up of extraneous trees, shrubs and weeds before putting in the new fence and it opened up a ton of space. Had plenty of produce this year and so want to put most of the space in flowers, although I might use some along the fence space to reduce the size of a few beds or to add room for new ideas.
