Me thinks what I thought were volunteer zinnias growing may actually be sunflowers! That's OK too.

Peonies are loaded with flower bud. If the temperatures stay cool, the blooms may peak for Memorial Day. Hoping...

My peonies are beautiful this year. I wonder if it's been the cooler than usual temps and it hasn't rained a lot. Usually when they are in full bloom, a rain storm knocks them apart.

#1 wife planted a row of Zinnias. She and her granddaughters like to go check on them. She cut some today for the kitchen. Alan

armjr, Like the mason jar of flowers in the back of the picture. One of our favorite vases for small, often wildflower, bouquets.

That girl was raised in the City of New Orleans, but her heart and mind were always in the country. I'm a lucky guy.

I had my first zinnia open today, but it seems too soon - the plants are only about 6" tall, and every one has at least a bud on the top. Should I pinch these off, or just wait until the blossoms start to fade, and cut those off? I'm new to these, so any advice would be appreciated!

pepperhead212, what variety are you growing? Some Zinnias are short.

With zinnias, as with many other plants, if you nip off the first flower buds and the leaf bud at the top, the plant becomes bushier and produces more flowers. I nip off the first flower buds of my peppers also, and they produce better roots, grow larger and have a lot better yield.

I brought out a planter that was wintering in my basement window. It has a Geranium and some alyssum still blooming from last summer. There was a Marigold in there, but that has died. Today I noticed about 50 little Marigold seedlings coming up. Good thing I like Marigolds.

Our baby Butterfly Bush that we put in last fall is growing strong and starting to bloom. The blooms are purple-blue, darker than the usual lavender colored varieties, very nice.

Today was on the porch and smelled a sweetness wafting over and tickling my memory. Went to seek it out and saw a yellow-gold flowered honeysuckle climbing over and through the porch wall (made of bricks with spaces between). Looking forward to sitting there this summer, although I realize I may have to whack it back every month with the pruners.
