Datgirl, you would not believe how I do the moon flowers...I soak the seed for several hrs and then stick them in a circle in a big pot 8โ across and 6โ deep. Once danger of frost is gone. I plant that huge pot in its entirety...and they take off. And how did I hatch on that idea? Dumb luck. The wind blew a 3โ starter pack of 3 plants off the railing into the overgrown garden near my deck. I was so frustrated that I just left the dumped pot and weeks later when I was cleaning up the bed, there were 2 plants that had rooted and survived. So I donโt fuss anymore. I just plop those starters into a shallow hole and add soil to the top.

First Lady marigolds planted 3/19 are showing flower buds this evening. Give them a day or two and those buds will be open.
Purple Wave Petunias are trailing big time. Itโs not near time to put them in to the deck hay rack planters.

Last week we had pink tulips (with blushed tiny roses bought by daughter), daffodils( yellow, yellow and orange, white and peach), hyacinths, lunaria (annual honesty), dragon's head and dandelions in vases around the house for the Sabbath. All but the roses were from the yard. This week it looks like red tulips and pink and red hyacinths will be in the vases. Love having a lot of flowers growing. We once toured an estate on the Hudson that had been built with huge greenhouses and flower gardens, just to keep the house supplied with flowers in its heyday. The gardener's house was bigger than mine. Sadly, I don't think it is used any more.

The morning glories are going crazy indoors. I think I'll move them outside. They need sticks in their pots to climb! They are trying to wrap around each other and the lights. I'm thinking paint stir sticks will work, plenty of those laying around.
And I'm putting canna tubers in the ground today. I figure if one could make it the entire winter and start growing next to the foundation, they will be fine planted now, sprouting when they see fit!

Iโve become slightly obsessed with zinnias. Did 2 twenty ft rows of them in the middle of my front lawn last year and scatter them around gardens as well. Trying them in clay pot towers this year since they are really hardy and drought tolerant. I usually just get bulk mixed color seed packs online, 1500 seeds for like $8, but this year got some individual seed packs, purple, lime green, and cactus zinnias. Also trying some nasturtiums. I always have lots of volunteer sunchokes and plant some sunflowers as well. Right now the front lawn is crimson clover in full bloom!

raphanus, You can save seed from zinnias. Very easy to do and save a bunch of money. Except the hybrid ones don't come back true to color. I saved the Green Envy and the next year was gifted with orange. Very nice color!

I am so annoyed. You think I would learn. I bought bare root rose bushes from "Roses" (cheap department store) two years ago. Last year they grew well but didn't bloom. This year they are finally blooming and not a single one is as advertised. Every single one is just a species rose. And this is above the graft too. These were by the new garage so I didn't care too much about them but they could at least be real roses. I put one in the back by my fence that said it was Blaze climbing rose which I have grown before and liked. It is not. Never be lured in by cheap 3.97 roses.

I started Caladium saved tubers a few weeks ago. I didn't think they looked very good and weren't exactly firm when I planted them. I see one finally coming up. In the interim I bought more just in case....the new ones haven't shown their little heads yet. They are in the basement.

I picked a huge bouquet of Lily of the Valley today and was disappointed that the fragrance was really weak. Usually you smell them as soon as you walk into the house. I wonder why?

I noticed today that our Lily of the Valley plantings look a bit โho humโ. They grow beneath a Spruce tree in the windbreak. I never feed them. All they get is spruce needles, oak/maple leaves and road dust. Do they need more?

Mine are on the side of the house and have spread everywhere. I don't give them any special treatment and the plants are look good. Lots of flowers, they just don't have that strong smell.

And you have roses already- Thought someone would catch that. My daughter had brought me roses and I suggested we start collecting flowers from the garden and use the white roses, blushed pink, as filler. They worked with the tulips and other flowers we picked. Haven't bought anything since. The bulbs are almost finished, but hoping for peonies soon. There's also the overwintered calendula and my own roses should be blooming soon. Have an Abraham Lincoln rose that is taller than the garage. I should prune it back, but for now, seeing how large it will get.
