Keeping our eyes out for the big upright clusters of Red Sumac berries coming soon. Those crimson, astringent berries make a tasty pink "lemonade" that sure does calm and soothe a bad cough/cold. One of the best natural remedies that I know of, and a family favorite.

I haven't researched this lately but I always thought that sumac, or at least some varieties, were poisonous. Do you pick the berries from wild plants?

Yes, they're picked wild...but you do have to avoid the poisonous White sumac. The Red and Staghorn varieties have tight, upright clusters of bright red berries, while the white sumac has loose, drooping clusters of green or white berries. They're easily distinguished from each other in the field.

DS has been snatching berry clusters from along rural roadsides, and into the dehydrator they will go, for pink lemony "sumac-ade" cough and cold remedy. Good stuff. They are available in some local Asian and Indian food markets, for a zesty food seasoning. Never tried them that way, but it sounds interesting.
