Vokar , You have quite a varied melon harvest - literally melons everywhere! I enjoyed your photos, especially on this day when winter weather has made an early arrival and all things garden have been temporarily banished from my thoughts as freezing, heavy snows, slick roads and more become predominant. Do you specialize in melon growing? 70 varieties is a lot of melons!

SpringRain, Watermelon is my favorite fruit. So, it's high priority for me. However, I grow more kinds of tomatoes than anything. Since 2015, it's been between ~30 and 105 tomato varieties a year. This year I did 40-something with about 70-something plants. I plan to do somewhat more kinds of tomatoes next year if I can. I grew more kinds of watermelon in 2017 than any other year (so that was a whole lot even for me). Usually I only grow 10 to 20 kinds a year (and not all new kinds). I usually grow about 5 to 10 kinds of muskmelons, as well as about 8 to 20 kinds of peppers. Then I grow stuff like wonderberries, West India burr gherkins, squash, okra, Morelle De Balbis, summer savory, basil, other herbs, sunroots, and more. I'll probably grow about 8 to 12 kinds of watermelon next year. I think in my garden I prefer the three kinds of Santo Domingo watermelons, other winter watermelons (Navajo Winter, Navajo Red, etc.), and Weeks NC Giant, but if I wasn't using black plastic, I might do different kinds. The only new variety I plan to introduce next year is Mayo, but if I had Desert King, Tohono O'odham, Jemez, or Acoma, I might grow them, too. I plan to continue to let my watermelons cross freely, and breed new kinds.

Here it is March 16. I am a long ways away from getting a melon here........ Here we plant melon seed about May 5, harvest about first week of September. I guess if I want a melon I will have to go to the grocery store and see what they have available?

Here it is March 16. I am a long ways away from getting a melon here. Deer got all my first 2019 watermelons. I found that if I covered the melons with boxes, the deer would not lift the boxes, so I am going to cover the first watermelons this year with boxes. Deer apparently roam five or six hundred yards into cleared land at night.

Deer Problems? Shoot the deer. Problem solved. Not so easy, James. I could not determine when the deer were coming. Either they do not come every night, or when they do, it's something like 3am. And if I shot a deer, I would have to move it, which I am not now up to. And to stop them from coming I might have to shoot six. Shooting one or two will not stop a herd of deer.
