This county is adjacent to us. I was reading comments on the radio station’ FB page. The breeders business was closed and then opened under a new name. One of the comments was that an auction was held the weekend prior to this discovery. Dogs that didn’t sell were put down. One poster said that two hundred dogs were destroyed. These business are supposed to charge sales tax? How do they get a permit to collect tax? Is a sales tax permit tied to a social security number? Seems there could be ways to track these a$$🧻.
As long as people/pet shops purchase from these puppy mills, they will continue.

binnylou , just as a clarification, I didn't recall your mentioning having any dogs, so I didn't address the post to you. There was no intention to deliberately omit you though. Just wanted you to know that I wasn't ignoring you. This "breeder" sounds like someone who needs to be put out of business. There was certainly a reason why it closed and opened under a different name, and I'm guessing that has to do with violations and ill treatment of the dogs. To be responsible for such agony in animals, let alone what I'd consider a literal slaughter, is despicable. These people SHOULD be put out of business, forever as far as dogs are concerned. I don't recall w/o reading the article again if ASPCA or any state animal cruelty organization is involved, nor did the article address any lack of medical care, although obviously the dogs weren't being examined for CB. On the issue of taxes, I don't know anything about Iowa business, but what I do know is that businesses need to have an IRS EIN - Employee Identification Number. It's used for reporting taxes, and for Trusts. I had to get one for my sister's Trust and for my father's Trust, as taxes are reported with that number, as opposed to a SS number. I've done very little legal work relating to sales taxes, but when a commercial entity pays tax (if it does and isn't ignoring that obligation), its returns would all be filed with the EIN. And I'm assuming that any permit to collect taxes would also have to be issued under the EIN. I suspect though that some shady operators don't comply. In trying to find companies to haul things from Dad's yard, I've run across a number of people who claim to be businessmen but I sincerely doubt they've ever applied for an EIN. Some of them don't even have commercial liability insurance. So these alleged breeders might be scofflaws, and that might relate to why the name of the so-called company was changed. There would be a way to track them: the EIN, or a sting operation in which someone pretended to be interested in purchasing a dog or dogs, got the name of the company and the owners, and had law enforcement, the State's tax department, or IRS check this out. Any of those entities could trace the names to EINs, and taxes, including whether or not sales taxes were paid. Then, get out the big legal clubs and go after them! I've run into something slightly related when trying to find contractors. One guy claimed to have a junk hauling business, but he had never filed any assumed name or incorporation papers, had no liability insurance, and would have borrowed all the vehicles he would have needed. I've also encountered alleged handymen and more who wanted to be paid in cash. One of the tree contractors I interviewed wanted to be paid ONLY in cash. No charge, no checks, no traces. And perhaps no ethics and no conscience? Ironically, he claimed to be a member of a very religious organization. Another issue might be that breeders may need licenses not only from government but from the breed organization. I think the issue of tracking might depend on resources, and ferreting out these probably unlicensed and unregistered and no tax ID outfits. Another of the so-called contractors with whom I spoke allegedly had "2 clients" who might be interested in my father's house. One allegedly was a breeder who had lost dogs to car accidents, as her house was on a heavily traveled highway. I didn't tell him I would never consider anyone who didn't properly provide for dogs and allowed them to roam in the vicinity of cars. And I suspect she was one of these "under the table" breeders. I would NEVER consider her as a potential purchaser.

SpringRain🕊️, Thank you for this article, I hadn't heard of it! Princess is back to normal. The vet didn't say anything about CB. I will stop in the office and inquire about it's prevalence in our area. That county is 100 miles from us. binnylou, SS # may or may not be required when applying for a sales tax permit. I have one for selling non-food items at farmers market, i.e. flowers/plants. I don't recall that I had to provide SS for it. So sad these kinds of puppy mills exist, shows the extent of those owners' greed. And at the expense of innocent animals.

Mumsey, interesting that you didn't have to provide any SS ID to get a sales tax permit. I would have thought that a state treasury department would want that information to check tax returns vs. sales tax paid. Oh, well...
