They are a big deal in Iowa. They also are an eyesore, it just does not look natural. Found this article that speaks of all the pros and cons. But it does NOT say that most of that energy doesn't even stay in Iowa! That's the part I hate. They sell it to other states. They are creeping up on our little town and soon will be dotting the landscape around Dad's. I can understand why some landowners agree to them, they get up to $10,000/year for each turbine on their property, land lease contract with the energy company. www.desmoinesregister.com/story/tech/science/environment/2017/04/20/wind-power-saving-rural-iowa-wrecking/99789758/

tom ๐, Yes, it is a totally biased article. My question is, if it is producing cheap electricity, why do our rates keep going up??? Because they are paying landowners a lot of money and putting those things up isn't cheap, and sending the power elsewhere. Each turbine has to have an access road from the public road. Those turbines are massive, sometimes they close roads around here at night to bring them in. I've watched them try to turn off an exit ramp. What an ordeal! Takes about 1/2 hour to turn the corner. Lots of maneuvering with manpower directing the driver and surrounding traffic.

My question is, if it is producing cheap electricity, why do our rates keep going up??? My opinion: Your rates keep going up because of systemic inflation engineered by the Fed. Your money loses value, thus prices increase. We don't have wind turbines here. I have never seen one, though if I remember correctly one of the first was constructed in the mountains of NC. Instead, we have solar farms. I am especially concerned about dirty electricity and ground currents (they can kill cows), though sound and flicker are perhaps more damaging to human health -- actually, to the health of any living thing. People and animals who have to live near these things are catching hell. A doctor once told me that a stomach ulcer could be produced in a confined dog simple by regularly spraying it with water. Wind turbines are a similar health-destroying irritation.

That video wouldn't open for me. Do they look worse than the utility poles and electric lines that we have all over the place? That's a shame IMHO not to keep the power locally we have solar farms. By the vibrations in the ground? Someone invited me to join a solar farm but now I am not sure. Not from the solar farms. Here's an example of flicker from wind turbines. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbIe0iUtelQ

So it seems that wind turbines aren't the energy salvation method we thought they might be. I wonder what the radius of effects are, if future turbines would all have to be consolidated in a turbine farm instead of being integrated into communities.
