Strangely enough, even though the small one I re-potted a little more recently, when I checked the pots out, the older, larger one is much looser, and that smaller one was definitely getting packed. So I re-potted that one in one the same as the older one - 15 gal, instead of 10 gal. Maybe there's just a certain size that is getting too small? That rootball was solid, when I cut the fabric off, then I cut the roots away with an old boning knife, I keep out there for these things. I only left about an 8" ball, maybe only 6" deep. I had to pack in about 6 or 7" of mix in the bottom, before setting the ball in, and piling the mix around it. I always put the hydroton on after I take it in, and put it in place, but I'm thinking of putting a layer of fiberglass screen over the soil, before the hydroton, to keep it from mixing up with the soil. Here's the re-potted young plant, in the 15 gal fabric pot. You can also see the rosemary plant that I trimmed way back, in the background. Re-potted younger lime tree, trimmed way back, and put it in larger, 15 gal pot. 10-8 by pepperhead212, on Flickr

pepperhead212, What is the growth rate of your Kaffir lime trees? Would you consider them slow? Moderate? Fast? I'm thinking of buying a couple of seedlings & was wondering how long before I'd be able to harvest usable leaves.

breezygardener They are relatively slow, at first, but they actually grew faster than the instructions I had read, which suggested not to harvest any until a year after starting. After a little over 8 months, mine had over 80 double leaves, after starting out with just 6 pairs of leaves each, so I took 3 or 4 off each plant, which didn't bother them at all. And then, they took off! When they are put back out, I trim them way back, and they take off, with the sun, and eventual warmth. One is way too much for me - the only reason I have the second one is because I wanted to try air layering the first (I sold one of the first two to a couple with a Thai/oriental take out restaurant/grocery), and it worked! But nobody I could find to sell one to - I'll have to post it on Craig's list, or one of those, for a local sale. That first one is 23 years old, the second one I started when that was about 10 years old!
