Hubby tells of leaving home on his bike in the morning and not being worried about , as long as he showed up for supper. He covered a lot of territory on his bike. I wish my grandkids could know such freedom.

leaving home on his bike in the morning and not being worried about , as long as he showed up for supper. We had similar freedom and this was in the Los Angeles area. My cousins, sister and I roamed for miles on bikes and walking with a wagon. We found hidden "wild life" areas in the city. Even made some money picking up tossed away soda bottles. Got 2 or 3 cents per bottle. A wagon full gave us plenty of cash for 3 or 4 of us to buy ice cream, sodas, bubble gum and/or candy bars. Then back on the bikes to work it off! We were doing this as young as 8 or 9 years old until we got old enough to want to take buses to go shopping for clothes downtown- that started at around 13 or 14.

Us kids kept the neighborhoods clear of bottles on our bikes. Tie a bagful of empties on the handlebars, or balance a bag in your lap on the way to the grocers. Plenty of pocket money for goodies.

Used to ride my bike everywhere. To the beach, marina, pool, school, stores, Knott's... Time to hit the reset button.

I wonder if these work in a pot. I don't know about a pot, but "maybe" in a half-whiskey barrel-type planter. They grow REALLY tall - like 6'-10'.

I've got to get me some of its cousin ironweed, with its deep purple blooms, to go with it. I ADORE Ironweed!!! When we first moved here 26 years ago we had lots of it growing on our property, but it seems to have all petered out. I'm thinking of starting a new perennial garden where we have a couple of our pets buried & plan to use a number of natives, so may try to establish a new patch. The wild ones we had were a delicious very deep Royal purple, & grew around 5' or so tall.

breezygardener, tall goldenrod would look good with the ironweed, and they both bloom at the same time. That vivid purple of the ironweed is striking.
