datgirl , Probably too much moisture, now too hot! Finally got enough for a meal for tonight. I'm thinking they will straighten up this week!

pepperhead212 , Is the earthbox forum still working? Haven't looked in ages. But I thought you might like to see my earthbox growing string beans. These are burpee stringless greenpod www.burpee.com/vegetables/beans/bean-burpees-stringless-green-pod-prod000579.html. 100_3373 by shallon stryker, on Flickr They are starting to flower now. The row I planted directly in the ground has been producing well. I planted this pot on 6/20. I see Mexican bean beetles have found the in ground plants. I hope they don't find this earth box. I have this box sitting on my wall (waist level) Easy picking when they produce. Bugs have been slow to murder plants this year. Is it because of the heat or what?

Blue Lake bush bed #1 was a big success. Now, it's ready for re-planting this week as Bed #3. Bed #2 (the seed that was labeled "bush", but is actually half-runner, as it turns out) is thriving, but a tangled mess as I didn't get proper structure up in time. Good steady flow of beans, though. Fewer bug problems so far. Is it because of the heat or what? I've noticed a difference in insect issues this year, too. Bird populations, too. The weather certainly affects it all.

I've noticed a difference in insect issues this year, too If we are all noticing a difference of one kind or another...β¦.that is good. That means we are paying attention. I like when people pay attention..

Is the earthbox forum still working? Haven't looked in ages. The old forum is still available, but it is not active, and you can't do a search - if you know what you are looking for, you can find it. web.archive.org/web/20161124203416/http://forum.earthbox.com:80/They do have a new forum, but it is not very active: forum.earthbox.com/?action=unreadI am planning on planting some bush beans in the EBs, and other SIPs I have, or am going to, pull some of the tomato plants out of, as well as a few others that I had some seedlings of my gourds chewed off in. I figure, I might as well have something in them! And bush beans are faster, and I have two varieties I tried before.

Fourth and probably last picking of bed #2, the tangled unexpected half-runner bed of Blue Lake --- productive, but tangled. Bed #3 is sprouting nicely from proven bush-growth seed. The next bed, in a week or two, will be the half-runners with higher trellis and netting.
Best year for snap green beans I've had in 3 ... no, 4 years. Happy family. Happy gardener.

A friend gave me some of her BeetleJUS from GardensAlive. I sprayed it, but still noticing tons of JB. I think it's working some, when I go to knock them off into the bucket, lots of them are dead.
Production is still low, now we have been having very cool nights which is probably slowing them down again.

I noticed a bunch of dead leaves yesterday. Thought now what, I never have problems with pole beans except the JBs, Upon further investigation, I found two of the stems cut right at the dirt level. At least it was only 2 so far. There are plenty more. So there I was under this trellis full of green bean vines, covering up the base of the remaining plants with netting. What a site. I just started picking beans too. Dang critters, oh yeah they got a whole bunch of plum tomatoes too. Viva's. grrrrrr

I was shocked today, when I checked my beans. The Blauhilde has blossoms all over it, which is about the right time - planted on 7-14, and blauhilde is fairly fast for a pole bean. But the other one - Thai Purple Podded Yard Long - has beans all over it! Not ready to pick, and very thin, even though 6-8" long, which is normal for long beans. But this is the fastest long bean I have ever grown, for sure! I almost didn't even look at them. Thai purple podded yard long bean, planted on 7-14. In spite of Dorian, my short long beans are producing. With just three plants, I pick as many beans as I want to cook at one time.
