Can you imagine seeing a worker in a full body, protective suit, with gloves, mask and respirator, apply weed control in someone's yard? What would the homeowner think? That it cannot possibly be safe, of course. And that is bad for business. That is a good point, but "a full body, protective suit, with gloves, mask and respirator" are uncomfortable, especially on warm day,s and workers object to wearing them even when provided. I sometimes put on a mask when grinding herbs, and it becomes uncomfortable is just a few minutes.

Observed yesterday, at least 9 anhydrous tanks delivered to neighbor. The "premature deaths" of the article refers to a shorting of life caused by lung irritating nitrogen compounds in the atmosphere, I think. This theoretical damage from growing corn is trivial compared to the damage done by nitrogen compounds released by cars, and we are not about to give up driving. I suspect you are more likely to be injured by the dust produced by combines.

And then there's Mumsey, whose blood pressure goes up when corn shucks start blowing into her yard.

tom ๐, Husks, they are husks! And you are right. They drive me crazy. Hoping the farmer plants beans there this year. He has planted corn the last 2 years. Strange as the crops are usually rotated.

Aw shucks, it's a dialectical difference. If I said husks here, people would look at me funny, like I was pretending to be educated.

Slightly related to this topic is a commercial I saw tonight, sponsored by a law firm which apparently is soliciting participants for a class action lawsuit based on RoundUp side effects. While I get tired of these commercials, and some of them are really pushing the envelope on legal advertising, I'm glad to see that the law firm sponsoring the ad is going after RoundUp.
Sometimes negative attention can be obtained in a variety of ways. I actually hope people respond to this firm's ad and that it does file a class action lawsuit. Maybe some of the Roundup supporters will be educated.

tom ๐, Shuck is what you DO to the corn. But you have to pull it before you shuck it.

First. You pick the corn. Then you shuck the corn. But thatโs just here in Iowa.

First. You pick the corn. Then you shuck the corn. But thatโs just here in Iowa. The term here for separating the ear from the stalk by hand was "breaking" corn.
