Potatoes at Dad's are blooming and look great. 2-3 weeks and we can steal some from the hills. There are 2 volunteers growing in my backyard garden, right in the middle of the pepper rows. I'm thinking those will have to go to the compost bin.

I have a volunteer potato plant right in the middle of the onion plants in the raised bed. I had pinched it off, but it really wants to grow.

I had pinched it off, but it really wants to grow. Don't mess with Mother Nature. She knows what she wants!

binnylou, You have to dig it out! It will keep returning. I have 3 in the pepper patch. They will have to go. I was able to steal 6 golfball size taters from my hills at Dad's, they were supper. His didn't have any yet, but his were planted 10 days later.

Looks like you decided you did not want it there, so pull it out. Treat it as a weed!

If I pull the volunteer potato plant in the raised bed, I’ll be disturbing the onions next to the potato plant. So, I won’t be pulling it. I want those onions to grow.

Is anybody doing mid or late season potatoes? I've never tried this, but those little Yukon golds that I dug yesterday would make good seed...or would they? Is there a timeframe involved before they will sprout? Do they need chilled first?

binnylou , I don't know if I'll plant Yukon Gold; some years ago I tried non white potatoes and didn't care for the taste or texture. I've got some baking potatoes I bought that quickly began sprouting that I plan to plant. Even if I don't get full sized potatoes, it'll be fun the see what I do get. What I'd really like to find are California Long Whites. The only store that carried them in this area was purchased and closed down by Kroger. The Long Whites aren't standard as are some of the other regulars that stores offer.
With this unique growing season, heat and rain, I'm thinking that second crops have a better chance than normal.

Dug 3 hills of red taters today 10 on each hill and nice size. I’m impressed.

lilolpeapicker , planted them Good Friday. Dad planted his 2 weeks later and there is a noticeable difference in size. His rows are next to mine.
