I could smell the corn, the earth, the humidity. I love those smells, and especially that of the air and foliage after rain.

First swarm of gnats. I cover holes for shrew traps with old plates. Gnats swarm over them. I think gnats are attracted to white.

First migration of the fire ants, with the crazy warm weather . The winged drones are popping out and taking flight...the workers are into the hugelkulture bed, doing their soil-breakdown magic. Wouldn't mind if they took a tour through the compost pile...disturbed next month, they'll move on out of my way for spring. Got to learn to live with 'em, ouch and dag-nabbit. Can't beat them, but they can be dealt with just fine in my household garden.

Wheelgarden, do the fire ants sneak into the house? From what I've read, their sting is terrible. Stay safe!

SpringRain๐๏ธ, they have come in once, several years ago, but were repelled with boric acid dusting along the baseboards. Now they seem to be quite content out in the yard. Taught them buggers a lesson, I did. Hah! They can be a real pain (literally), and we haven't made real peace with them, but we've learned to deal and live with them for the most part. We have a variety of ants --- red, black, fire, and piss --- and they seem to balance each other... As long as they don't come into the house, I'm okay with it.

First dogwood in bloom. I was puzzled why this one dogwood bloomed before the rest. Now I see that it is getting nutrients from my compost pile.

First large yellow butterfly with black trimming. It must be newly hatched because its colors were especially bright.
