First ants in the kitchen in 2019. This is actually a good sign. Why, you ask? Because they came in with the lettuce I harvested.

I've been waiting for this one myself. I can see one of the feeders from my chair.

Our potatoes are still sleeping under the dirt. I gambled on the unusually warm winter here and planted potatoes on February 13. They were sprouting on March 16, and there was no late frost to burn them off. Just luck.

I got a bad first yesterday - first mosquito! Not the first mosquito bite, fortunately - I saw it hovering, waited for it to land on me, then BAM! I was surprised that I didn't bruise myself. Two more later, which I didn't hit quite as hard. I'm surprised that I haven't seen any by now, given the warmth around here.

tom π, Dad used to trap snappers in the quarry. Those things were huge. He got snapped by one and it took a chunk out of his hand several years ago. He ended up with a pic line and antibiotics for 6 weeks. Nothing to mess with. He is no longer able to manage the traps so it's a thing of the past.

Dad used to trap snappers in the quarry. He cooked them? They need to be controlled because they kill water birds. Turtles crawling through the yard are a common occurrence here. Sometimes they are so large that it is hard to get them into a 5 gallon bucket.

tom π , Yes, they were eaten. These things are way too big for 5 gallon buckets. I'll have to ask Dad the weight of the ones he caught. We never see them roaming the property though. We see lots of painted turtles sunning themselves on logs in the water. And swimming snakes....those are the reasons I won't even wade in the quarry. I was tubing once and looked down, saw a snapper and never did that again. Brother will be scuba diving in the next 2-3 weeks, I'll ask him to look for snappers! As well as the boat anchor we lost yesterday.
