First seasonal "extinction" - deep purple crocus have already bloomed. The Siberian Squills are now spreading across the back yard, little armies of dainty, lovely purple flowers. I see something white as well but will wait until the winds are calmer before venturing out.
Heard the first morning songbird, a Cardinal I think. It must have been far back away from the house as I could barely hear it.
Saw the first robin sometime last week.
Now it's my treat for the "first"....the Dairy Queen I pass on my way out to Dad's house. It's been open for some time although I've resisted, but if you're familiar with the Borg, you'll know that "resistance is futile" when it comes to a tempting Dairy Queen, or a Peanut Buster Parfait... absolutely delicious!

tom 🕊, oh, yikes! How do you protect yourself from them when you garden? Are there a lot of ticks in your area?

Segueing from my tale of the "natural" garage air conditioning, I guess I should consider this the first breakdown of the season. Hopefully it's the last, but I have a feeling the garage and the house have more surprises in store for me.

How do you protect yourself from them when you garden? Are there a lot of ticks in your area? For protection I wear rubber boots and check myself at night. Yes, many ticks and many tick diseases. Lyme's, spotted fever, lone star allergy, tularemia, and many others. I have been on a course of antibiotics twice for tick diseases, but no permanent damage, unlike some of my unlucky neighbors.

First snake removal from garage today. I told hubby to leave the garage door up because the snakes should be waking up. He wanted to know if the door was to be left up so they could get in or out.
Silly old man. Gotta find out where neighbor wants the snakes this year...at the pond or in his barn.

First watering yesterday and today. And so it begins. Gotta get the drip system up and running but want to wait a couple more weeks. By then we'll be past any chances of any more hard freezes.

First crocuses in the main garden, first daffodils, and huge swaths of Siberian squills, which are so generous with their flowers that they expand annually, now creeping into the next door neighbor's yard. But they're good neighbors. Last year the wife's mother came over, dug up a bed, solarized it, and planted an organic garden for the young couple.
