Why do some call arugula "rocket"? Maybe because it sprouts day after tomorrow. Rocket is the British name of the plant so i think its pretty common in the commonwealth countries to call it that. Here's an interesting little fact from wikipedia about the naming of arugula "The English common name rocket derives from the Italian word Ruchetta or rucola, a diminutive of the Latin word eruca, which once designated a particular plant in the family Brassicaceae (probably a type of cabbage).[6] Arugula (/əˈruːɡələ/), the common name now widespread in the United States and Canada, entered American English from a non-standard dialect of Italian. The standard Italian word is rucola. Totally unrelated to Ricola cough drops, however. I suppose. Anyway, arugula is good stuff. I've had a plant survive the winter, with frequent nighttime temps in the 30s and sometimes down to around 20F.

Mine ("Astro" from Pinetree) is lush and still producing after a few recent frosts and a freeze. Using the younger leaves now, since the larger ones are getting bitter. Good thing about arugula is that not only am I fond of it, but the family is, too.

For those wanting a bigger arugula hit I dare you to try wasabi arugula. Its mighty spicy Is the "spicy" in taste only? Would I encounter skin irritation issues when cleaning and prepping? Hubby loves wasabi...especially those wasabi peas from the snack section.

binnylou , I very much doubt it would cause any skin reaction, its just spicy. I haven't grown it for a while but I think its very good, a few leaves in a mix will definitely perk it up a bit. Its too much to eat all by itself in my view
