I have had good celery once, and that was decades ago. Since I've had some luck with overwintering lettuce, I'm considering trying to overwinter celery. I have heard of celery being grown successfully in New Jersey.

tom 🕊 ,would you be overwintering your celery in a hot frame, or by some other method?
Any suggestions on best brands of celery to grow during Spring through Fall? If we have as hot and scorching a summer as last year, I'll probably plan to harvest when the heat wave hits, then perhaps start another crop when it cools down.
This will be my first time growing celery. We're discussed blanching on another thread, but I'm open to suggestions from all who are growing celery.
(I know it's probably late to be considering celery as a directly planted crop, but it's worth a try.)

SpringRain, I grew Botanical Interest Tall Utah 52/70 Improved last year. I suspect that is what I planted this year because the new pack purchased from Pinetree has not been opened. I have also grown Tango, but I don’t recall much difference.

would you be overwintering your celery in a hot frame, or by some other method? A cold frame, but maybe with added protection. Celery is more difficult than lettuce.

Do they grow through the entire summer this way? In my neighborhood, yes, they do. The heat? Is that what you are worried about? Not a problem if you water. They tolerate heat, but watering is mandatory. If you don't water enough, you get the chopstick size stalks desertwoman describes, but that's okay too, if you are into dehydrating. The dehydrated celery would work well in the Mrs Dash seasoning. organicgroup.freeforums.net/thread/1364/dash-seasoning

On my way home yesterday from sis's, l stopped at my favorite nursery. I asked about celery. Yes, they have some in one of the growing houses. So a staff person took me on a hike to locate them, they aren't out for sale yet, pretty small. We finally found them. Single pack for $1.79 which I thought was pricey. I did find 3 that had 2 in a pack, so I bought those. Brought the price down to $.90 each. It's Tango. I'll be potting them up separately.

Celery looks good, it's about 10" tall. There are 4 more in another part of the garden.

Stopped at my favorite nursery on the way to sis's on Saturday. They were having clearance. I got 6 more celery (Tango) for $1.00 each, 1/2 price. They are quite large. I planted them this morning in areas that will get afternoon shade. The ground is plenty wet, watered them anyway, and mulched with dry grass.
Those first ones are huge. I'll be tying those up today or tomorrow to blanch. Supposed to do that 2-3 wks before harvest, or so I read. I stole a stalk from one of them, that tasted very good!

The celery is over 20" tall. I tied them up a week or so ago. I'm going to sacrifice one to enter into the county fair tomorrow.

Sacrificed one to enter in the fair. Pained me. It was a requirement to trim the leaves. The leaves are so pretty!

Just picked this one to share with a friend. She called asking if it was ready, she had been at our local store and they wanted $3.49 for a conventionally grown stalk and it didn't look the best. This one is 27" tall with the leaves. Amazing. It also tastes amazing. It's Tango.

While in the garden this evening, I see my celery has a pest. I’m guessing white fly...a white cloud rises from the celery patch when it’s disturbed. Same for my beets and carrots. I gave all a good shower. The pest is so tiny it looks like a speck of white ash. I think it’s way too small to be aphids.
Ideas?
