I just got to thinking, I don't recall seeing sweet potatoes discussed much here. I'm curious what you all have been growing.
I've been growing Ivis White Cream for a number of now. I started with an assortment of these and a couple of orange fleshed varieties. I ended up selecting one orange variety that did well, but a few years ago my wife cooked them all. So it's been only the white ones for a few years now. I ordered a new assortment from Sandhill Preservation Center this year, so hopefully I can find another good orange variety. I also ordered a few slips from a purple fleshed variety to make my 5 year old daughter happy.

I'm not very sophisticated in growing these; I used to just plant what I had bought after it sprouted. Some were reserved for ornamental use as I've always loved the vines that sweet potatoes produce.
I had also thought that the purples were primarily ornamental, but I might try some this year.
Good topic; I love sweet potatoes and should be more astute about growing them. I might try to build up hills more than I have in the past; I remember digging farther down and apart when I planted them, and that level of digging isn't that easy any more.

I don't even know what variety I grow. They started out from a lady that sells sweet potatoes at the farmer's market every fall. Some will start sprouting when they are left in the spring and I just grow those. They did great at my community garden plot in the raised bed but at home they get eaten. Soo I am putting in a raised bed at home this year and we shall see how it goes.

That you are putting in a raised bed. I thought I had better clarify my comment.

ecsoehng, could it possibly be a location issue and/or raised bed issue? That there are critters at home that aren't at the C Garden? It will be interesting to see how they do in a raised bed at home!

I planted Georgia Jet from Burpee but did not have good luck with them due to my own incompetence. The few that grew and I managed to find were pretty good and I will try them again this year.

I’ve only grown Beauregard, and we love them.

We dug a little over half of the sweet potatoes on Wednesday. Very pleased with yield of the Amish Red, Brinkley White,a Continental Red. The Dingess purple are disappointing, as they are very long and skinny. Flavor is unique and good though. The purple flesh makes me think I am eating the children's play doh.

The one sweet potato I planted this year is blooming purple flowers now, kinda look like a morning glory. I've grown some before from sweet potatoes bought at the grocery store but, do not remember them blooming. Anyway I am assuming after the plant quits blooming it's ready to be dug up. Correct?

deckman22, yes, they do bloom. Dad digs them near first frost when the vines begin to turn yellow.

Well had our first freeze yesterday, well ahead of schedule I might add. While out picking peppers that were ready I decided to dig up the sweet potato plant since I noticed it had some freeze damage and figured last night's freeze would finish it off. I had forgotten this was a purple sweet potato, never had one before so I'm looking forward to trying it out, maybe tonight. Not a huge yield, maybe 5 lbs. I was told the vine leaves are eatable but, decided to pass on those and chunked them over the fences for the chickens & deer.

I didn't grow any sweet potatoes this year. But the local growers will be stocking the shelves soon with nice Beauregards and Georgia Jets. Allspice at the ready. No sweeteners needed. (They are sweet potatoes, after all) I'm Wheelgarden, I love sweet potatoes, and I approve this vegetable.

Sweet potatoes purchased for our Thanksgiving Day meal were delicious. No, not organic, but still tasty. The last time I shopped, they were 28 cents per pound. I purchased enough for a few meals and a small one for growing. Yup, thinking about giving it another try. It’s been ages since I did the toothpick/glass of water method. Is that still the best method?
I have no idea what the variety is, but they are quite dark and the flesh is smooth and sweet.
