I pulled most of the onions yesterday, layed them out on the garden paths to dry a couple days. I'm thinking to cut those tops off by at least half before they are totally dry. I usually let the onions be in the ground until they are all dried up. Thought I'd try it this way once.

I put onions and garlic into my wheelbarrow uncovered and uncut in the shed until they dry. Pulling some onions to give room for growing of the rest. Wonder how your different way will work Mumsey . Keep us undated please.

I am now harvesting tree (walking, Egyptian) green onions. They die down during early summer but are now regrowing. I usually have these onions until a hard kill in January, and then, after about a month, they begin to regrow. They may be the most productive and beneficial vegetable I grow. Green onions is all they are good for, but they are very good for that.

Wonder how your different way will work It worked great, though I think they would have grown a tad more if I left them a while longer. I did leave about 50 and just pulled them a week ago. None were rotting.

Thanks but I’ll pass. I have qualms about buying seed from eBay/amazon. I’ll probably stick with Pinetree, unless they go out of stock.

To add my opinion about Amazon and ebay for buying seed -- I would definitely not buy seed from Amazon. Just too chancy. If I couldn't get the seed from a known reputable grower I might consider ebay IF the seller could answer questions to my satisfaction about how they were produced, etc. Regarding a GREAT long keeper. Clear Dawn is EXCELLENT! Can't say enough good things about it. It's open pollinated. (Patterson is a hybrid.) When Clear Dawn was being developed Copra was one it's parents. I grew Copra (a hybrid) for years until I discovered Clear Dawn several years ago (thanks to one of my readers.) Seed sells out quickly from good sources -- so if you want to try it -- order ASAP. If you don't use all you buy -- package and place in the freezer. Otherwise - germination goes waaay down the next year. Freezing the seed really makes a difference with onions. Austrian Brown is also a great keeper and one of the most beautiful onions you can grow. Dark brown skin. Yellow Parma is also a good keeper. Both of those two are medium sized. Below is a picture of the austrian brown.
