I have a tray of onions, shallots, and leeks. They were hardened off enough that I would have put them in the ground. Then I needed that space in the trailer because I just had to get the tray of celery out into the sunshine. Onions came back inside under light. Do I need to start the hardening off process again? Onions look pretty “buff”. Leeks and shallots not so much.

Mumsey, binnylou, My pattersons (onions plants I grew from seed), and the red and white sets have been out there now for that LONG 30 day period where they look horrible and then Amazingly perk right up and grow. That is a long 30 days in my humble opinion, and every year, it tortures me, and then the plants just: PERK UP! It's odd and funny at the same time. Hope all is well with everyone! Hugs to all of you.

I had to pull my 1015's early cause they were bolting. Some were good size but most smaller than I wanted. That wasn't the end of my troubles tho. It's been so rainy here and much cooler than normal the onions are not drying out well. Some of the greens have continued to grow then bolt while others just rotted. Probably 10% of the 400 I planted/pulled have rotted and they still have some drying to go. Fortunately the bigger ones that I kept for storage are not the ones rotting.

The raised bed areas delegated to onions, shallots, and leeks was all planted. I had some of each still waiting for a home, so I just poked a hole here and there and put them in lettuce bed.
Done!!

Onions are starting to bulb out. I have pulled a few for salads. I got a pkg of those bulbs a while back, red ones, and planted them here and there. Plan for those is to sell as green onions at market. People love them.

This is another “my brother story”. He called me yesterday to tell me about his bargain. He was at his favorite greenhouse, apparently showing interest in some onion sets...asked the price. Then the owner came out with a 25 pound bag and said he’d take three dollars for the bag of onions. How many onion sets do you get per pound? He was working on a 75 foot row, but he would have been glad to give me a few. I declined. Isn’t it kinda late to be planting onions?

binnylou, They would be good as table/green onions, they won't bulb out much if at all. I planted some bulbs last July from clearance $.25. Had nice green onions for market. People love them. I would think you could freeze them as well.

I planted red onion sets this year. They make a superior green onion -- good flavor and tender even when large. I used some in a fish stew yesterday.

I tried this about 3 years ago and it wasn't worth the effort. 75' is a lot of nothing...they didn't bulb out at all. Is your brother in the same planting zone?

lilolpeapicker ,he’s about 35 miles south of me. He’s definitely zone 5 while I’m not sure I believe that zone for me, even though that’s what “they” say. but, he loves a challenge, and if it fails, he’s lost just a few dollars and got some entertainment. And it keeps him out of the casino.

My late planted sets ended up very small, due to late planting. That's normal, onions bulb out when the days begin to lengthen (first day of summer).
My regular crop of onions do not seem as large this year. I'm sure it's a weather thing. Dad says "don't let the August sun set on your onions, they will rot". But I leave them longer with no ill effect. They are just now starting to dry out. I'll leave them a while longer.

I gave hubby the word a few days ago...no more store bought onions. We will use what comes out of the garden and not be concerned with storage. When they’re gone, they’re gone. I will still purchase a red onion for the tater salad.
