tendingmygarden yes, it's great to hear from you! Thanks for all the onion info. Let's see if they make it to April! Also remember to move them to a cooler location or closer to the floor once they germinate. They like cooler. I put mine on the lowest shelf which is just 2-3" off the floor.. And keep those babies trimmed to 3". You will have to trim a couple times a week.

I planted some seeds in the garden some time last Sept. Not many sprouted and they seemed to grow painfully slow. Those that did are coming along nicely now along with the 400 or so sets planted first of Dec. All are 1015's.

Gave the onion babies their first haircut yesterday. Didn't save the tops for eating, most of them had the seed shell on them. They will be better for eating with the next haircut.

planning on starting them indoors under lights
I vote for that.
Maybe down south that would work with winter sowing, but up here, I'd go with indoor and plant out. I just don't think they would sprout soon enough out there to have any decent size onions at the end. Heck, I need at least 10 week old onion sprouted seedlings by 4/1, I figure winter sowed seeds won't even germinate till middle of April.
Try some inside and outside. Sounds like an experiment is in order. Along with good records. And I would use the same variety seed for both plantings, and REPORT BACK progress, such as when each planting sprouted and the temp of each.............
Okay, now I'm excited........And you have that greenhouse! Oh my!
From the site you shared:
"they’ll just sit dormant until it’s the perfect time for them to sprout".
That is what I was speaking of. It might not be till middle of April till they sprout. Ya never know. It's a gamble that way. But if you don't care one way or the other if you get onions, then, do it any way, but if you want guaranteed onions, start indoors.
Sorry for the long rant. shoo!

Maybe down south that would work with winter sowing, but up here, I'd go with indoor and plant out. I need to get my seeds right away, will put my first order in tomorrow I guess. I love these seed companies - you put your order in then they send you all those 50% off specials with free shipping. I'm going to order one pack now then buy 20 more after I get that discount coupon in my paw!

Second haircut for onions. I used those tops and put them in potato salad for the party yesterday. They really added the onion flavor without the onion "crunch"!

I did not get a good germination rate for those direct sowed last fall. I also forgot to hill up my rows so the dirt would gradually erode away from the bulb. I tried pulling one the other day just to see the size and the onion broke at the top of the bulb.

Onion seed planted 2/17 has sprouted. It is Patterson from Pinetree. After looking at different varieties, ordering from Pinetree was the path of least resistance.
I know, I said I was done growing onions. I'm not a quitter.

binnylou, Restrain yourself from overwatering the onion seedlings. Trust me, I know! Damping off! Onion seedlings! Unheard of! Nope, it happens! I know! I have saved about 40 seedlings and repotted. Now why did this happen to me? Well, I tried doing them in a 72 cell tray with 2 seeds to a cell. And I am not used to that. I always planted them all in one pot that I line with weed barrier paper so I can lift and separate to plant out. I never should have changed my habit. Oh well. I will have about 40, and I have already been to the farm center to inspect and will get some white and red bulbs, or a container of plants to off set my Pattersons. That is the plan, and my onions go out 4/1 here.
