notice how pretty those tires were with lettuce growing in them? Yes indeedy, I DID notice! So what is your nitrogen source in the tire circles and how often do you replenish the nitrogen source?

So what is your nitrogen source in the tire circles and how often do you replenish the nitrogen source? My nitrogen source has been my swamp water compost. I was afraid to add any nitrogen material during the winter because that might make the lettuce grow soft and be damaged by the cold.

I am tempted to put a couple Little Gem starts out in the garden. I have about 3 dozen of them in the basement that I've been eating from. This weekend is when it will happen. I'll put milk jugs over them to protect from rabbits (until I get fences up).

I am tempted to put a couple Little Gem starts out in the garde Same here, but just a few of all three varieties that grow in my laundry room. The electric fence that protects my garden from critters is not up and running yet. He needs to get on that. I do have some chicken wire than I could put up around that raised bed, but the deer could just walk up and reach in. Tasty stuff she grows, they say. If I put a milk jug cap over as planned, I hope that would keep the deer away from them. It's a good thing I up potted all of those double planting.

I'm planning to put the milk jug, then a wire cage until I get the fences up.

My experience with hungry deer is nothing works other than a 6' plus fence to keep them off crops.

I put out four lettuces previously, but really have the itch to put out more of them. I have a βboxβ fashioned out of hardware cloth. Itβs about 7 inches tall and the width of the raised bed. Originally, it was buried and garlic was planted in it to protect from critters. Iβm going to put out lettuce and use this box upside down to protect the lettuce babies. We have an overnight temp of 29 degrees predicted for Friday. If that prediction holds, Iβll put a blanket over them.
Always gotta have a plan. Sometimes I think itβs the challenges that keep me going.
UPDATE...now have a total of 16 lettuce babies planted in the raised bed.

Direct-sown Cisco romaine, Little Gem, and Simpson lettuce sprouting. Also, arugula, of course --- it seems to sprout once it hits the ground to my great happiness. Fordhook chard and cilantro are up, too. Still waiting on the parsley and dill.
Next up: bush beans and tomatoes!

I picked up a 2 pk of Truchas starts today- a new to me dark red mini romaine. They also call it a 'little red gem'.
Will see how I like it. Hopefully will get some seed planted in the garden over the weekend. (we have a very windy cold snap moving through today, Thursday and Friday so no outside work)

I may have gone over board on the lettuce planting. Planted some in full sun areas that will probably get too hot before they are fully grown. The nice thing about lettuce tho, it can be harvested early just smaller yields.

My first romaine experience is working okay, except for a 50% germination. What's up is doing well. Little Gem looks good, as does Simpson (as always).

wheelgarden1, I never know what germination is on my romaine. I plant it so thick "just in case". And since I save the seed I can be generous.
