I have had 3 salads off the Little Gem, plus gave away some. Planted a second batch of seeds which are sprouting already.

Mumsey 's growing it and davidjp mentioned that Little Gem can be planted fairly closely... About how far apart do you guys plant the seedlings outside?...

ahntjudy, Don't know, never grew it before. I'm thinking 8" or so. Dang, it tastes good in this dead of Winter!

I have quite a few starts going under the lights of Little Gem, Parris, BSS and Dino Kale... But I only started them on Feb 26 so they're small... Wish I had started some early like you did Mumsey...

I'd go even closer on the little gems. Pretty much all my lettuce I plant at 6 inches but I don't often let them get to full head size but just pick off leaves as they grow.
I've read that they can be grown at 6 inch diameter spacing I have some ruby gems growing at the moment which should be interesting
The wild garden seed folks have been breeding lots of little gem variants

The little gem seed package I have says sow three seeds every 6" but, I do them in rows very close together and thin out to get the 6". The first thinnings go to the chickens then I make salad out of them.

thinnings go to the chickens then I make salad out of them. That just struck me, you make salad out of the chickens? I'm pretty sure you mean the rest of the lettuce.....

Ah a good restaurant, something I miss cause out here in the boonies there is no such thing. Heck we don't even have a good BBQ joint here which sinful being in Texas. Pretty you have to cook yourself here if you want good food.
The same goes for grocery stores, produce dept. really is pitiful. I have to drive at least a 1/2 hour to the nearest decent grocery store. Austin & San Antonio have great stores, too far for me to drive. Even in Boerne or Kerrville the stores lack much in the way of organic produce.
Daughter that lives here will shop in San Antonio sometimes and says Little Gem lettuce goes for 4-5 bucks a head. When she told me that I thought good thing I grow my own now.
