You could also tie a paper bag over the flowers and hand pollinate. Remove the bag once the fruit is set. Might be a problem if it rained during the few days this would take. Will have to look up how this is done. Maybe wax paper bags?

Seed Savers Exchange sells blossom bags, 10 for $5. Quick drying, re-usable mesh. You could easily make them yourself, providing you know the gauge of the mesh. www.seedsavers.org/blossom-bags

More research came up with this article listing the types of bags and bag materials and their pluses and minuses: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pollination_bagsThere seem to be a lot of choices out there. Have fun.

for isolation purposes, could you just create a sleeve out of netting like from the fabric store? And use a tomato cage to support it? Which fabric should I ask for? I would prefer a large sheet because in some cases I would like to cover the whole plant in order to be able to select the best fruit.

tom 🕊, there is a netting that looks like what shower scrubbies are made of, only it is more coarse and scratchy. I think it is 72 inches wide and probably about a dollar per yard. I think if you ask for mesh netting, you will find the correct product.

Or any of the lightweight row cover material that is used to exclude insects.

I use the lightweight Agribon, to cover entire Earthboxes of pepper plants, to keep pepper maggot flies out. I built cages out of 1/2" pvc pipe, to support the fabric. A small tomato cage would be good for a single plant.

Agribon is good stuff. Comes in three different grades if I recall correctly. I use it for my winter garden.

Just got my Baker Creek order yesterday. I only ordered Rosita Eggplant and a romaine called Little Gem Lettuce, described as very small green romaine-type, one of the best tasting lettuces, a superb heat tolerant variety. They sent a free seed packet too, I got Lipstick Pepper. pepperhead212, have you grown this one? It is described as very sweet. It's a regular size pkg, looks to be 25 seeds.

I got that same free pack, Mumsey. I've never grown it; I might, but not sure yet. I seem to remember somebody on another forum that had good success with it a while back. I'll have to see if I can find that.

Mumsey, I didn't see any posts with a taste description of the Lipstick, but several gardeners planted it 3 years in a row, so they must be well satisfied with it. I'll have to PM one that grows it, to get her opinion.

My brother called this morning. I shared with him some pepper seeds that are a probable/possible Marconi and Jimmy Nardello cross. He planted some of those seeds and some that he recently purchased. Both were planted 12/26. He just wanted to let me know that the seeds I shared with him were up, and the purchased seeds were not. And he wanted to know why that would be happening.
I think he really just wanted to let me know that he had peppers started and to see if I had started mine.

I only have a few new peppers this season, so far. I'm not necessarily growing all of these old fav's, but most of them, unless I get a similar variety.

Put some Peter Pepper seeds in a wet paper towel 3 days ago. They are sprouting already! I put them in a baggie and lay them in front of the heat register. I think I'll be starting all peppers this way.
