I haven't seen any basil volunteers out there tom π... It's not too late though...Gonna sprinkle some leftover last year's seeds around out there... By the time the tomatoes are ripe, I should have me some basil...

You are not alone, ahntjudy. I had a couple of basil starts still under lights. They made it to the garden yesterday.

pepperhead212 Serrata basil, the only one I managed to nurse through all the odd Spring weather. Looks super in the pot with flowers, tastes great too!

That does look great, Mumsey, and doesn't it smell good! My serrata is looking best; that new everleaf, that was supposed to go a long time w/o bolting, bolted before serrata and even Siamese queen! Go figure...

pepperhead212, Everleaf was a bust for me. They sprouted OK, then didn't like being moved outside. Up and down weather I think. Yes, it smells divine!

I agree that you're possibly overwatering. Sometimes very small containers need to be watered daily inside (if that's the case, try retransplanting it into a larger container).
If the basil has begun to flower, try pruning it fairly low and lettingit grow back. Basil can die not long after it goes to seed.

Three varieties of basil getting big and fragrant in large pots. The trusty Genovese, plus Thai and Blue Spice. I lightly brush them with my hand, and start craving tomatoes and crusty bread with pesto.

I haven't started my basil seeds yet, but always grow both Genovese & a Thai variety, of which I have a couple to choose from. This year I also ordered a packet of Holy basil seeds, since quite a few Asian recipes call for it.
But I do pretty much always have a pot of Italian-type basil on my kitchen windowsill throughout the year. Supermarkets sell those tiny little plastic clamshells containing a couple of sprigs for between $2-$3 each, but I can get a potted basil plant at Lidl for $3 that lasts me 6 months or more. (And yes, I know I could also sow my own during the winter for even less, but I never think of that at the time - lol!)

Lemon and regular basil were a big hit last year. This year I'll be trying cinnamon and spicy globe basil.

I have some seedlings of a Genovese type growing. They are about a 3/4 of an inch tall. Unfortunately some sort of Italian bird ate about 1/3 of them the other day. More likely a snail got them. Those remaining should be enough. I love the smell of it.

I checked my basil seeds today, and after just under 3 days all 5 had seeds sprouting, 3 varieties almost completely, one from back in 2017! I planted all that was left in the Gecofure pack, and if I'd known they'd germinate that well, I would have saved half of them! I had some even older Siam Queen and Holy basil seeds, and got a number just starting to sprout in those. I took these out of the sprouting dishes and spread them around in pots of starting mix, then spread about 1/4" more on top. They're in a covered tray now, and I'll thin them out, when they come up. One of the 5 varieties of basil seeds, almost every one sprouted. by pepperhead212, on Flickr I soaked the seeds in GA-3, 250 ppm, which speeds basil up considerably, and maybe increases %, as well!

DS and I sampled the Blue Spice basil today, and we were impressed and started talking about how good it would be in various dishes. Oddly, the first thing I thought of was a Blue Spice Basil ice cream.

Plucked a nice bowlful of Genovese, as some were about to bloom. They'll grow even bushier over the summer. I've never had basil this early, as I've always direct-seeded them in May. This year, we started them earlier in trays. Now I'm waiting on the tomatoes for a change. Brought that basil in to discover Sweetie making pasketti* and crusty garlic bread. Perfect timing.
*[pasketti-what DS called spaghetti when he was little. We adopted that as a family term.]
