Thanks, gardendmpls. I needed that reminder. I've been teetering on the edge of putting the garlic into a raised bed that does not have hardware cloth on the bottom. Silly me.

Many sunny, windy days ahead this week. I WILL get the garlic in!

Dave, what was the solution? And how long?

So, what digs up garlic? Do they eat it or just dig up a few and toss them around?

meatburner The fellow who first told me about the soaking said to use cheap vodka! I researched it and found several soaking suggestions that said to soak first for several hours in a solution of 1 gal water, 1 tb baking soda, and a tb of fish emulsion fertilizer or kelp fertilizer. Then drain, and soak for 15-20 min in 50% rubbing alcohol, undiluted 3% H2O2, or vodka, then plant immediately. I'm guessing that the baking soda was as an anti fungal - I saw this in most of the pre soaks.

It has been off and on raining and snowing with frigid temps and hard freezes, so my garlic planting is on hold. Suppose to get to the 60's by Friday, so the plan is to plant this weekend.

The raised bed is ready...I gave it another stir this afternoon. I could plant tomorrow....but then there is that moon thing. Maybe next Wednesday?

binnylou, I have only ever planted by the moon accidentally! Things seem to work out fine either way. Garlic is going in Friday, still a little wet out there. I have the mulch all ready and waiting.

I was considering this soaking solution, but the "recipe" that I found was a quart of water instead of a gallon. So many suggestions, so many experiments, so little time.

Finally got to plant all of my garlic today, but still have to mulch, fertilize, and put some fencing on the mulch since the winds can be a bit fierce in the community garden. I'm hoping to get most of this finished during the weekend.

I'm aiming for today, high winds should help dry the ground.

hahhaha Mine is finally in the ground as of yesterday afternoon, 10/20/18. It usually takes 3 weeks to see nubs, so I marked the calendar to check for them on 11/10/18.
