If you are taking the med Valsartan, a blood pressure med, do your research. There is a recall on it. I had heard nothing about this until I got a letter from an insurance provider. I called the pharmacy and asked just how long has this drug not been pure. She said they have no idea. Great. Somebody knows...they just aren't talking.

I agree- someone knows.
Are they saying what the consequences are for those taking it?

Thanks for the info, binnylou. I take one that sounds similar to that - Losartan - but when I checked it out, that one was not included, fortunately.

I believe that Losartan is a potassium prescription. I believe that because it's one of my mom's prescriptions.

Losartan is of the same drug family as Valsartan, angio-tension receptor blockers, used to treat hypertension, certain heart conditions, and diabetic kidney disease. As I recall these are potassium sparing diuretics which decrease the removal of potassium from the body. Many diuretics, such as Lasix, do remove potassium which means some patients have to take a potassium supplement. Either high or low potassium can be very serious.

There is now a recall on Losartan...100/25. Do your homework if you take this. I use a different strength and am waiting for the recall to include all strengths.

I think I bookmarked in my database a recall on a medicine which I can't remember right now, but I believe it was a BP medicine. If I remember correctly, it was another medicine created in China, and contained lead levels to an extraordinary and dangerous level. I'll research tomorrow to see if I still have the article listed someplace.

tom 🕊, good link. binnylou, now I remember which medicine had been determined to be contaminated with a potential carcinogen. It's addressed in this FDA release: www.fda.gov/NewsEvents/Newsroom/PressAnnouncements/ucm632425.htm"The impurity is a known animal and potential human carcinogen. This is the first ARB recall resulting from the presence of NMBA, which is the third type of nitrosamine impurity detected in ARB medicines. Recent testing of these recalled lots of losartan potassium tablets showed NMBA levels higher than the FDA’s interim acceptable intake limits. The FDA’s evaluation suggests that the nitrosamines found in ARBs may be generated when specific chemicals and reaction conditions are present in the manufacturing process of the drug’s API, and may also result from the reuse of materials, such as solvents."
