We only see water snakes, garter snakes and bull snakes here. Dad has bull snakes that roam the rhubarb patch from time to time. I always wear gloves when pulling rhubarb after encountering a big bull snake a couple years ago. They are not poisonous.

I wouldn't mind having a snake in the garden if I didn't have to see it.

Could use a few more garter snakes here to eat up the slugs. Have a few by the compost pile. In the spring, the cats kept bringing them up on the porch. Rescued a few, but some were too badly chewed to survive.

Virginia has quite a few snake species, but the one that seems to be the most prevalent here is the Black Rat snake. We come across a large number of both adults & juveniles on a regular basis. Have also encountered an Eastern Hognose snake, a Corn snake, small Ring-necked snakes, a couple of Green snakes, & several water snakes when we've been around waterways over the years.
We do have both Copperheads & Timber rattlesnakes in the area, but luckily haven't seen any on our property or in our wanderings.

We've got copperheads and Eastern Diamondbacks around, I've only encountered a few copperheads. Local cattle farmers have a tradition of hanging dead rattlers on their fences, in the belief that it discourages others. We have a wealth of black snakes and corn snakes, which compete with (and sometimes, in the case of black snakes, kill and eat) the bad guys.

I sprinkle egg shells around the base of all brassicas with very good success. I use iron phosphate, but I often forget to sprinkle it around the transplants, especially on the edges of the garden where they hang out in the weeds.

Mostly gopher snakes around here and not enough of them as far as I am concerned.

not enough of them as far as I am concerned If I kept chickens I might feel differently, but I do like having my "good snakes" --- Black, King, Corn, and Garden snakes --- around for rodent and pest control. Better than a cat.

On patrol for vermin, the curious black snake looking through the kitchen window is curious.

We had a large Black rat snake on our deck once that was looking through the glass sliding doors at our cat on the other side. Snake was reared up in a "cobra striking" pose & cat was sitting up on its haunches & they were both poking at each other from each side of the glass.

Had to chase a copperhead away from the garage area. If I could have dispatched it on the spot, I would've. The black, king, rat, and corn snakes are apparently slacking on the job, and I'm going to have to have a talk with them.

Found a fat, well-nourished 3 foot copperhead next to the house. It was quickly dispatched with the trusty machete. My black snakes are slacking in their patrols again. Time for another talk with them.

Time for another talk with them. You should schedule one for every 6 months.

We have king, gopher, garter, and rattle snakes. Most common are gopher snakes. I see a rattler every couple of years, though I'm sure they are here more often. Haven't seen one for a couple years, so any time now, especially since it's getting much warmer...
