On the deck water bowl this morning…6 Yellow Shafted Flickers…all at once. We’ve never seen more than 3 at a time. It looked like coffee time out there. Yes - this time of year we have them around in fairly large flocks. Since their favorite food is ants, they're the only woodpecker one is likely to often see feeding on the ground.

From where my recliner sits, I have a view of the lower half of a barred owl. He/she has been in the same spot for an hour +/-.
We had a delivery arrive after dark last night. Just before I heard the beeping of Mr. Brown’s truck backing up, there was a loud hoot fest taking place. Perhaps the owls (there was more than one, possibly 3)were disturbed by activity just below their oak tree.

Perhaps the owls (there was more than one, possibly 3)were disturbed by activity just below their oak tree. The Barred owl is the owl we hear & see the most in our immediate area. They tend to be more vocal now because it's the "courting" season. They can start nesting as early as February.

Owl is still sitting in the same spot…hasn’t moved.
And, now have three bluebirds at the water bowl. Just like last year, but mid January.

We had an overnight guest last night! When I went out at dusk to bring in the Hummingbird feeders, one of the Hummies was sitting on the ledge not moving. I tried to shoo it away, but to no avail. Went downstairs and got my bird rescue box and gently lifted him into it. Closed up the box and left it in a dark quiet room overnight. When it was dawn, I put the feeder out and the other Hummie showed up for breakfast. Put the box out on the deck, opened the top, Hummie sat there for about ten minutes then flew up to the feeder. Success, yay! It is supposed to start warming up today, so hope we will be back to normal. Poor little thing was just too cold and exhausted. Glad we were there to help out.

Poor little hummer. So good that you could help him out, madamezil, . I really feel for the wild life caught in this extreme cold.

Three robins and three bluebirds parked at the water bowl…four turkeys cleaning spilled seed from below the bird feeder.
Why are the robins still here?

I have crows around here, usually in groups of 4 or 5. A few days ago, some flew over the house and I noticed more in the distance so I began counting. The last one to fly over was number 103, anyone else see so many crows?

Why are the robins still here? Since the concrete bird bath is away for the winter and the smaller metal one's water is frozen over, I've been putting out 4 large plastic plant saucers of water every morning and making sure they stay accessible during the day. The birdies are lovin' it. And robins?...There have been dozens of them at the baths. Normally, there is a 'pecking order' at the bird baths, but in this cold and lack of other water opportunities, they are lined up fairly closely, drinking right next to one another on the saucer's edges. I found that interesting. Birds and animals are smart. The word is out...Head to ahntjudy's.

The bird feeders are now about 2 feet from the top of a snow bank. The Juncos are there looking for ground food. Actually saw one fly up to the suet but didn't perch. So I felt sorry for them and went out with a new suet and seed to scatter on top of the snow. My first step I sunk up to my knee. The second step held me on top, next step sunk. So crawled my way to the feeder, then was able to stand without sinking again. On the way back I was standing, then somehow when I got to the edge of the bank, fell and landed on my knees, right one more so, on concrete driveway. I thought it would be sore or worse. Nope. Not even a bruise! Still a tough old bird...... . Next week when it's warmer I'll go and shovel a path to the feeder.

I've been just throwing the seed on top of the snow. Bird feeder is still covered in frozen snow and ice. Lots of birds just ground feeding, and 2 squirrels.

I really need to brush up on the different birds. Know the most common ones but want to identify the one that comes to perch of kiddo's bedroom window screen. Is it a chickadee? Wren? Hard to tell when you just see its fuzzy little belly.
