I see an occasional cardinal. House finches and sparrows are about all that remain here. The Turkey Vultures have taken flight, yay! I think they bring more friends when they return every year.

The bird feeder is up and stocked with food. So far, only Blue Jays are visiting. Still no Cardinal sighting..
update…so far, since the feeder went up, I’ve seen a single female cardinal. In the winter months, it would not be uncommon to have 20 plus cardinals feeding at one time. I’m really puzzled by their absence.

I see lots of blue jays this time of year. They like all the acorns that fall from the oaks.

Hawks are staging above for the past few days, and they occasionally dip down to raid. The stalwart crows and jays usually repel them. Geese and occasional ducks pass by. Owls are heard in the distance. Plenty of phoebes, sparrows and wrens about, several cardinals and mockingbirds, too. They're looking at me, saying, "when's the winter seed coming out?"... birds take some of the drearies away in the cold months.

binnylou, We have cardinals here, and lots of blue jays. I have seen mourning doves cleaning up the ground. Woodpeckers too. I have suet out for them.

I'm starting to see juncos here. They appear to like the seeds from the asters and goldenrods which I leave all winter for them.
I saw a hawk in my backyard the other day. I have also seen bard owls. I'm catching a lot of mice in my basement in snap traps this time of year. I toss them outside and they disappear overnight - must be the owls!

gb98, I’d guess that you have a four legged critter farming the perimeter of your house and finding the mice.

binnylou ,we do have foxes here as well as the neighborhood cats which are the only 4-legged creatures that would eat mice. I've seen the next door neighbor's cat take out a few chipmunks.

gb98, do you have skunks in your area?

binnylou, skunks aren't that common here. In the 3+ years I've been here, I smelled one once. Back when I lived in NJ, I used to see and smell them often.

Since the bird feeder is up and stocked, the Cardinals are starting to come back. Not in the numbers that we had last winter, but sometimes, several at a time. Late this afternoon, I heard the music of a male Cardinal. I don’t recall hearing the males singing their “ looking for a lady friend “ call this late in the year.

Several years ago, I was pushing across the back yard...and a big crow lighted down about 10 feet away and followed me as I went about. I spoke to him or her as we travelled along, and got curious looks in return the whole time...Transcendental. I do talk to our crows. We're kinda used to each other. They have their ways, but they are so intelligent. I talk, and they look at me like, "what in the world is he babbling about now?" I sure do love our wildlife.

A couple weeks ago, there was a mourning dove's worth of feathers strewn around the front sidewalk and under the Japanese Red Maple tree... The next morning, I saw and watched a hawk, up in a neighbor's pine tree, tearing and eating its featherless prey...
Cycle of life...Unfortunate for some...
