Our grocery run a few days ago included a stop at the local farm store. Our wild bird food supply was down to about four days' worth, and there was only one car in the store parking lot so we made the stop. Multiple bags of mixed seed, thistle seed, suet cakes, and a bag of safflower seed...sixty bucks later, the birds are happy.
We've never purchased just the safflower, but the cardinals are loving it. Hubby sprinkled some in my hayrack planter on the deck and the Cardinal crowd has moved in. And the Downy Woodpecker has discovered the thistle seed pouch. I didn't know they liked thistle seed.

Got about 50 Juncos hitting the bird feeder along with some Starlings, HOSP, Magpies and Eu Doves.

Some birdie is hammering on the house. Hubby goes out to utter some bad words, then checks the suet feeders. Sure enough, both suet cakes are gone.
I wonder if the messenger is self appointed to let us know the feeder is empty. Anyway, there is a delivery on the way and the woodpeckers will leave us alone for a while. We are being held hostage. Give us suet or we’ll hammer your house.

Interesting. We have the Flicker and Downey Woodpecker here. Have not had them hammering the house.

There’s a pair of Purple Finches visiting our deck this morning. There was some “beak touching” going on. Can it be courting/ bonding time already?

binnylou, enjoy the bird watching and please keep notes. Do you do any bird photography? Do you have a bird picture to share?

New bird in town...yesterday, we had a bird visit our blue spruce and I assume our feeder. The bird had his back toward me so I didn’t get a really good look at him. The head and back was brown/black with possibly a red sheen to the feathers. The belly was the most intense red/scarlet/orange, and when he flew off, there was a big flash of red color. I think the red is not just throat color, but full underbelly color. When researching for what this bird might be, Red Breasted Meadowlark could be a possibility, except they are not in this area. The search continues...

Red-bellied Woodpecker?
Lewis's Woodpecker? But this is mostly a Western Species.

A search for "red breasted birds in Iowa" gives pictures of possibilities.

James, doubtful. The red color wasn’t right. I’m thinking we might have a visitor from out of area. I may contact a nearby refuge and ask if anybody has mentioned seeing this bird.
