I have 5 large plate glass windows on the South side of my house. The Robins will see the reflection of the sky in the window and fly as to fly through it, "crash". Sometimes the poor bird will survive and get up and fly. Sometimes the bird will die. But it will never try to fly through that window again. Those that survive learn it is a no-no.

Its a sad fact that millions of birds die a similar way. www.audubon.org/news/hundreds-millions-birds-killed-annually-building-collisions-0I found a few window decals helped and mosquito screens. For a long time I was trying to find a Lawrence's goldfinch, and was checking all the bird field guides and driving considerable instances to try and find some. Eventually they found me and I picked up one that had collided with my window, quite sad. Has been a good day in the garden for birds, saw my first Swainsons thrush and flycatcher, not sure which one yet though.

Spent twenty minutes watching a brown thrasher who was especially busy in the spot where I used to keep wood chips and mulch...that bird was very spectacular in thrashing and tossing litter, then seemed to find a "honey-hole", start foot-digging like a dog, then reaped the bounty.

The sun came out in the later part of the afternoon, so I decided to take a golf cart cruise around the back four. There is a section of the wild area that has a bunch of 10 to 15 foot saplings, really close together. Just as I got past those trees I stopped to have a look around. There is an old hickory tree that snapped off many years ago. The way it broke off, it was too dangerous to attempt removal. We decided to let Mother Nature take care of it. I kinda think Mrs.hooty owl might be raising youngins’ in that broken off tree stump. While I was sitting there and taking in the greenery, Mrs. owl appeared out of nowhere and headed east.
Then I hear a turkey clucking. As usual, I can hear her, but can’t tell what direction she is coming from. I’m still listening and looking around and I see something in a huge old tree. Might be a gnarly limb, but it looks kinda funny for a limb. Kinda rounded on top. Well it’s Mr. owl and he is huge. The owls have become very frequent visitors to the yard area, but we never get a good look at them. We hear them and see them in flight, but they blend in so well with the trees, we rarely see the complete bird. He let me watch him for a while...he was watching me...then he decided to check on his lady friend.
I need to take binoculars next time. I never did see the turkey.

binnylou, There's nothing like just sitting still and watching the birds/wildlife! I do that when in the boat fishing, then a fish on the line will wake me up.

Mourning doves that were nesting atop the air conditioner, under the eave, have fledged...

So many birds visiting the deck...Orioles, Cardinals, Grosbeaks, Goldfinches, and now there's a Bluebird fluttering at the storm door.
I wonder what he wants.

The Mockingbirds are back, in good numbers...DS set up a small bluetooth speaker at low volume with flute and fiddle tunes at the south end of the garden this afternoon, and we watched a mocker sit next to it on a post in the "catbird seat", staring at it for 25 minutes, like learning more tunes for the summer repertoire. If they're repeating bits from it tomorrow, I won't be surprised.
