I'm missing my crazy, funny mockingbirds --- my favorite local bird --- for the last couple of years! They've always entertained me and kept me laughing as I work in the garden. Lately, they're conspicuously absent.

At the bird feeder: Magpie, E. Sparrow, Junco, House Finch. Up the road a piece was a big hawk in a tree, perhaps a Rough-legged Hawk?

Saw a bald eagle fly overhead yesterday! There is a wooded area a mile away and a nest has been spotted there. Eagles will be cleaning up old nests and building new ones soon, they will begin laying eggs late February!

Fun on the Eagle. We drove up to Hardware Ranch (a place where the DWR feeds the elk) and there was a Bald Eagle flying there.

lilolpeapicker: "catfood?"
Yes, the pelleted kind. The magpies love it.

Just started seeing a white breasted nuthatch on the feeders recently. The usual suspects this time if year are white crowned sparrows, yellow rumped warblers, goldfinches
Won't be long before we'll start to see migrants coming through

davidjp, Have you been watching the Big Bear Eagle cam? Two hatchings in our local mountains. No I haven't. I'll take a look. I did go up there one winter and got a very distant view, good to see they are doing well

I am sure we all have birds in our gardens. They may be a help in catching bugs, They may also peck on your fruits at times. I guess we just have to put up with them? Here the Magpies have built some nests in my trees.
Today coming to the bird feeder: Junco, Magpie, Starling, RW Blackbird, House Sparrow. House Finch.
