Saw my first migrating rufous hummingbird the other day.
And looks like theres a pair of red breasted sapsuckers establishing territory in a dead tree in the garden. I've also heard a bittern booming over the nearby marsh
That and the usual dark eyed juncos, golden crowned sparrows, spotted towhees, black capped and chestnut chickadee, house finches, and the occasional red winged blackbird and stellars jay at the feeders.

Many Phoebe, Cardinal, Bluebird, Wren, Robin, Sparrow, and Thrasher females are "great with child". Go Mama and Poppa, and go babies!

26 degrees, 2 inches fresh snow. I will take some seed to the bird feeder and watch to see what comes.

Birds are definitely migrating. Saw about 200 swallows flying over yesterday. They were violet green swallows. Also seeing a few rufous hummingbirds at the feeders to join the resident overwintering Anna's. The usual feeder birds are now dark eyed juncos, golden crowned sparrows, chestnut and black capped chickadees, red winged blackbirds, spotted towhees and stellar jays Here's not a great photo of a rufous at a feeder yesterday

I toss some dry cat food in with the seed that goes to the bird feeder. The magpies like the cat food. Well the magpies came, but have seen nothing else on the feeder. There was a big bunch of Eu Doves hanging around, but they are MIA. Usually there are some small sparrow sized birds around but they too are MIA. Where are the birds?

Its migration time so birds are changing, moving through.
Here swallows have just appeared as well as goldfinches at the feeder.
Now I hear two bitterns calling from the nearby marsh with their extremely weird booming calls.

I took this picture this morning and called it "Jumping the Gun". Snow on the ground; snow in the air; 11°F yesterday morning; and mom is already sitting on the nest. (EC dove, by the way.)

I realize the pic of the bird itself is pretty lame, but every time I tried to get a better angle she would fly and I got tired of disturbing her. With the weather we've been having I just thought it was interesting that she was already incubating eggs.

weedkicker, do you have problems with raccoons bothering the birds and the nest? We used to have a wren house hanging from the corner of the barn roof. A raccoon climbed the outside corner of the barn and destroyed the nest. those sheds hanging around the nest should help deter critters.

A riot of birds and their songs today, and they're pleasantly filling up some of the usual noise and commotion of human activity. They sense it, and they sound a whole lot sweeter. ...and the Mockingbirds are back in numbers, to my great pleasure..."Mock, mock, mock...What are you doing?...Hi, hello there!...What did you say?...Say it again, please...say it again, please...Hi, hello there..."
