The Orioles are back this morning. They are fluttering around from the table to the windows...then sitting on the sill, peeking through the glass. They apparently like the orange with grape jelly. One of the orange halves got moved and dropped about 8 feet from the table where I had put them. I guess they thought their lunch was "to go".

Still missing my birds. I'm wondering if something is going on that isn't obvious, such as the increase in traffic (noise and pollution) deterring them?
I haven't even seen a Jay, and only have heard a few cardinals and only seen a few robins. The mourning doves gradually vanished years ago after I had to have my Colorado Blue Spruce cut down; I inherited it when I moved in, after it had already been planted far too close to the house.
The starlings are still here; in fact, there's a nest in some kind of vent in the house next door. The parents were building the nest either last week or in the early part of this week, visibly flying back and forth from the house to the multitude of trees in my yard. I heard the babies a few days ago. They're really quite vocal, and it's kind of sweet.

Thanks for the report on your birds. I find the birds interesting. I put up a bird feeder and feed the birds year round. This time of year the Magpies are quick to come get the tidbits I put on for them. The seed eaters are not hitting it much right now. They must be busy nesting?

I had an unusual experience yesterday. I was digging out some dirt to lay a low retaining wall for a new flower garden, piling up the excavated soil a few feet away. And as I was working,I noticed a hummingbird hovering just over the pile. It didn't seem concerned with my presence and was dipping its beak into the pile of soil as if it was looking for nectar. After a few dips it flew off. So what gives with that? Bugs or worms? I sure didn't notice anything obvious.

I saw our first hummer this afternoon. I have some 12 packs of blooming hot pink Impatiens in the tomato trailer. I think that was the main attraction. Little buggers always startle me.

I stepped out on the back patio. Did not see any birds, but could hear some birds singing and chirping. From the sounds I got Magpie, Robin, RW Blackbird, Eu dove, E Sparrow.

Apparently Mr. Oriole doesn’t mind sharing his grape jelly and oranges. This afternoon, there was a new bird on the deck at the same time as the oriole. It was a Rose Breasted Grosbeak. I don’t recall ever seeing one of them here. Many years ago, we enjoyed watching a pair of them up in northeast Iowa at Pikes Peak State Park. The mulberries growing in the fence row were ripe and he was feeding her.

And now I’m seeing another bird that is not familiar to me. Research tells me that it is Mrs. Grosbeak. I wonder if they are just passing through or maybe they will build and stay. Best hide the cat.

Still trying to identify the new birds that are snatching bugs in my garden. Pictures if I can get 'em. lisaann --- my favorite birds of all time, the Mockingbirds, have finally returned to a degree..."listen to the mockingbird..."
