When I was a younger sort I did a bit of hitch-hiking...the clouds of oily rubbery dust blasted me with every passing vehicle. Not to mention the exhaust fumes. I'd try to hold my breath til it "improved"... It's really noticable if you're not accustomed to it, and it's real and nasty for those anywhere nearby. Like an uncovered coal train.
