Since last month the apples have really grown. We've had some storms which caused some to get blown off. I took those that fell and chopped them up for chicken food, no worms. I'm glad I did not spray. No ground hogs here but plenty of other critters some of which have begun to eat the apples. One that has started to turn red looked like a bird got to it another looked like a squirrel got it.

One of my apple trees has roots growing into my garden area and one of those roots has popped up above ground growing leaves. I can't see this being a good thing so I have pinched them off twice in the last couple of weeks. I'm wondering is this common?

What is your moisture level? Is it possible that the tree is sending roots upward to harvest moisture from the garden area?

It is best to have your garden area removed from the orchard 50 feet or so. Yes the trees send roots out in all directions and suck up moisture and nutrients from the soil, robbing the garden plants.

I've noticed that James. Not knowing any better I planted apple trees right near my garden areas. As the trees grow I will no doubt have to give up those areas for orchard only area and get another place to garden. Last year I noticed roots in the garden so I hauled in more dirt to layer over existing and planted lettuce there. The tomatoes planted close by are much smaller this year no doubt to the tree robbing most of the water. The other end of the tomato row they are much bigger.

I see that the cherry tree has two broken branches, one on each side of the tree. Branches were still attached, but not twisted like wind damage. I think perhaps a four legged critter looking to harvest cherries.

I thought the last cold spell would have eliminated any chance for fruit crop this year, but I see the cherry tree is loaded with “almost blossoms”, the peach tree is the same and showing pink, and the plum...whatever it is...is in full bloom. It’s like a white cloud. Too bad it’s pollinator died.
If Stark would ever get both the Bubblegum and it’s pollinator at the same time, I’d buy them. I just don’t know who grows in the garden and who died.

Do you have a trusted online fruit tree supplier?
I’m growing weary of Starks “out of stock” items. May be time to search for a new supplier. Hubby says he’s done planting fruit trees. It’s on my shoulders If I want a new fruit tree.

davidjp, I like that RainTree site; there's a good variety. I did find it amusing that they offer mulberry trees. I've had several volunteer, w/o seeking my permission, and spread themselves around the garden, establishing a foothold and becoming a problem. They did produce a good crop though. But they're aggressive growers and hard to eliminate once they're established. The raccoons and birds loved them though.

This year for the first time I had no die back on the fig so I will get a first flush. I have not had one in years, about when would that be? The first flush for me begins the first week of July, usually. You are north of me, so I would guess late July or early August.

Bumping this up as we move towards spring.
If you haven't already, best to prune your fruit trees before buds break. It's also time to start thinking about feeding fruit trees. The perfect time is just before bud break but you can feed up to month before that. And if you don't/can't feed them during that time frame you can feed after they are blooming, through May. Be sure to feed out to the drip line and about a foot away from the trunk.

I see at the beginning of this thread I was complaining about the fig tree. I bought it years ago at Roses Department store. I DID get figs last year and guess what? They were not Celeste. After waiting all those years I got turkey figs. I am annoyed but it is my own fault for buying from a discount department store. I should have paid full price at a reputable place. It is impossible to get rid of fig trees. THe green fig still has not produced a fig.
