I have a covered porch, so I move them out there and then gradually into the sun and then back onto the covered porch. Then inside if it's early in the process or frost is expected. I don't do that many seeds, though, maybe a couple dozen, so it's a pretty easy process for me.

Me too, I'd rather be "green". The red ones seemed like "red alert" to me!

With the SD wind, if I buy plants in those little black boxes, what I find is that it works best to actually put them in standing water, at least 2-3 inches deep. Either in a protected area, or in a box deep enough to keep the breeze directly off of them
I have ruined MANY plants trying to harden them off, and them wilting from the heat and the wind.

I also use a lot of milk jugs. I do use a shim. Make to small slits on one side of the jug, slip the shim into it and staple. Push the shim into the ground on the north side of the plant, and pull up the soil around the jug. Keeps them on the plants on the days the log chain is straight out.

It may get up to 50 on Wednesday this week!! Wouldn't that be loverly?
MrsK....your shim is made of what? And that is to keep the jug in place when it's windy as well as protecting it from the temps?

You go to the hardware store and ask for shims. They come in a bundle, and are a thin wedge shape piece of wood.
I cut the bottom out of the jug, make two horizontal slits in one side, weave the shim in, and staple in place so that the shim sticks out about 8 inches on the bottom.
This the part that I push into the ground. It keeps the jug in place even in pretty tough winds. Works well and is cheap.
