I'm guessing the people in charge of buying cans saw that the plastic ones were cheaper and bought them......because they didn't live in a rat hole and did not know rats chew up that stuff. Maybe they will try again and buy more metal cans? I doubt it.

My brother had a squirrel chew through the lid of his plastic trash can where he was storing his bird seed out in the garage. He knows it was a squirrel because it hopped out when he opened the garage door one day. Now he has a metal can for his bird seed

UPDATE:
Maintenance man was here yesterday. discussed the hardware cloth solution - he didn't know what hardware cloth was! I showed him my compost sifter, he said: "oh, I call that wire mesh". then he proceeded to tell me it had to be okay'd by property mgr (out sick with flu all week), which will take at least til Monday. he added; that if I purchased the hardware cloth, he'd put it in. Argh! knowing them, if I did that, they'd charge me for a new door without screwed on hardware cloth, when I move out! sheesh, I tell ya... I made a point to explain : look, this is to prevent rats from getting in there every again - a permanent fix - you see? I would leave it installed when I leave, even if I pay for it.
I gather, majority of tenants just trap the things and be done with it. I could I guess, just don't want to. I know it will leave upon persuasion.

You could always hire a rat assassin. Then leave his little head on a pike near the entrance and bury the rest in the garden. The circle of life and all that. Sorry but as rapidly as they reproduce the rat species is in no danger of extinction.

Squirrel chewed his way into the trunk. So we purchased two metal garbage cans...one for the garden shed and one for the bird seed. Hubby has been working on thinning the squirrel population around here. Some might think that is cruel...they are cute little critters. But when they start damaging our property , they are nothing more than a tree rat.

thinning the squirrel population around here. It might just be a Maryland potpie thing, but since I was born.............we make squirrel potpie AND we are use to getting bragging rights on who makes it better, and in this town my father always won................ Anymore true stories to tell?
