I thought one of the most interesting/disturbing pieces of information about that was that when it was withdrawn from South Korea the suicide rate dropped 10%

davidjp, that's probably because of having difficulty obtaining guns there. I doubt we would see the same effect here, since there is at least one gun per person in this country and that is one of the preferred instruments of the suicidal here. Paraquat is scary stuff. I know of quite a few conventional farmers who won't use the stuff because of the acute poisoning risks.

oliverman No I'm sure you're right. I heard south Korea has a pretty high suicide rate, something like 4x the US, second highest in the world Apparently it was customary for elderly relatives to walk off into the woods when times were tough and apparently today its most common amongst the elderly and theres very little social support programs en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suicide_in_South_Korea
