Whatever but mine is blooming NOW.
And I got a fall flower on my Clivia and that NEVER blooms twice in one year! Only in the spring, but I had a Halloween bloom, and it's just now falling off.
Just some oddities happening here.

Christmas and Thanksgiving cactus are two different plants from the same genus
If your cactus blooms near Thanksgiving it is probably a Thanksgiving cactus and if it blooms near Christmas it's a C- cactus, though growing conditions could affect a Christmas Cactus to bloom early.
Besides the different blooming times, the two have different leaf structure. C cactus have round smooth edges T cactus has jagged/ pointy leaves.
Can't explain the Halloween blooming though my guess is that it would be T- cactus blooming early. But that's just a guess.

desertwoman, I think mine blooms at Halloween because that's almost half way between Canadian Thanksgiving and American Thanksgiving. ;) Or, more realistically, because I take it outdoors in summer, so when it returns to indoors it feels the need to bloom.

These plants need cool temperatures, decreased moisture and shortened daylight hours to enter dormancy. They will bloom after that.
I don't grow them because I am afraid that my cats will eat them but I do think that they are beautiful. They have requirements for the number of hours of light and dark just like poinsettias.

No, just low temps..............light isn't a factor on this plant, or clivia..............it's those 50 degree or lower temps...........but still above 45 degrees that trigger these plants. But yep, that poinsettia is triggered by daylight...............like an ONION bulbing............

Mine has buds now as of Friday, November 25th. So does that make it a Thanksgiving Cactus or a Christmas cactus??

Brownrexx, Thanks to the links you've supplied, particularly the one with leaf shapes, I know for certain that it's a TG.

I don't know how to say this right: But brownrexx , if a plant requires the actual amount of light that we are getting at the moment, I don't call that an issue. It is getting NORMAL light. Nothing needs covered, to keep light out. However, you do need to keep it outside to get that 50 degree temp, I don't have inside. I guess it all about location. 12 hours of darkness, back at Halloween..........that's all it need to bloom. Poinsettia, dang............10 hours when we were getting 12.............that's when ya must play and not forget to cover. Cactus don't need that 14 hours darkness, 12 is fine and easy. Poinsettia need 14 hours darkness. I think mine is working since 9/22. But I had issues....................we'll see!

Adding to above: I made a new pot of cutting of my Xmas cactus. It will be fun to see the pot next year at this time of the year.

Some people have them indoors in rooms where the lights are on during the evening and then the plants gets artificial light which may interfere with the 12 hours of darkness that it needs.

Mine was so woody so I pulled it out of the pot and started segments.
I think all but one took.
