Next question...I have been feeding our cat dry cat food. She was eating IAMS just fine, but last time we visited the vet, he commented that she had lost weight. In an effort to get her to eat more, I gave her some wet canned food...as a treat. Well once she got a taste of that, she won't touch the dry food. She has two kinds of dry offered now. When she goes outside to sit on the deck, she then comes in and rushes over to the bowl...then walks away. How many kinds of food do I have to try? She really needs the hairball food...she has been leaving me presents. I bought some treats for hairball...first day she liked them...then not so much. She is six plus years old. I think she is playing games with me.

She'll sneak in and eat it at 2:00 a.m. Just like my dog does when I cook on the grill and don't share.

You could try putting a little bit of wet food mixed in with the dry food to wean her away from the straight wet food. That usually works well. Start with maybe 1/3 wet, 2/3 dry and then the next feeding put less wet in until she is back to all dry food.It won't make her sick she doesn't eat for a few days.
But gulf and mums are right. She's eat when no one is around and she'll eat when she gets hungry enough.
They will work us if they think they can get away with it.

You could try putting a little bit of wet food mixed in with the dry food to wean her away from the straight wet food. I;ve tried this...she picks out the good stuff and the moistened dry food remains and ends up going down the food disposer. I've used juice from tuna to entice her. Is she becoming an old cat? and just getting pickier?

There's an old saying: dogs have masters; cats have staff. She's got your number binny!
stay light on the tuna though- it's not the best for our kitties and make sure the juice is from unsalted water packed tuna. Oil and salt are not good of them.

There's an old saying: dogs have masters; cats have staff. She's got your number binny! I'm starting to know how daughter feels when trying to feed her child #2. I guess my main concern is that she will get sick from not eating.

Our cat stopped eating last year for a week! Now that is extreme, and she had other issues going on (she's 18) but she pulled through it just fine.
I've had cats stop eating for a few days and they handle it well and don't get sick. But, really- she will start eating the dry food again when she gets really hungry and realizes that the staff isn't going to serve her what she wants!
How long has it been that she hasn't eaten anything?

How long has it been that she hasn't eaten anything? she nibbles here and there...sometimes takes her morning treats...but she is not taking in the volume of food that she used to. I've never had a cat live to this age. And she is taking in water okay. I may be my own enemy by catering to her desires.

My cats get wet food for breakfast because the one has a kidney issue and needs the special wet food so they all get wet food but then they all eat dry food throughout the day whenever they get hungry.
I never need to encourage them to eat dry food. I don't give it to them as a "meal", it is available to them at all times in a self feeder.
My cats are 12, 6 and 3 so I have all ages.

We make our cat food and she gets fed twice a day. No dry food. I've been doing this for decades with several cats. A vet had told me that having food available all the time is not their natural way and not the best for their health. I took him at his word. How old is this cat binnylou?

Looking back through my vet receipts, I see we first took her to the vet on 2/11. She had "arrived" early in the winter, and at that time I guessed she was a full grown kitten. She was thin and had a kitten face. During the visit to the vet, doc discovered that she had already been spayed. I'm guessing she was a year old at that time? So she might be seven? She has developed the baggy belly like an older cat...is that an age thing?
