Mom called me today, just after lunch, informing me that her yard hydrant was frozen when she drug the hose out to water the cows. I went over and started pointing my infra-red thermometer at things and found that the pipe that runs along the bottom of the north basement wall to supply the yard hydrant was 30 degrees. Had to run a space heater pointed at it for a while to thaw it out. Will be running an electric heater in the basement there overnight tonight to take the edge off of the cold. I found a lot of pipes near the outside walls that were below 35 degrees. BTW, infra-red thermometers are a real handy tool. Just point at a surface and pull the trigger to get a reading.

Yeah, they are cool. Just like those new fangled thermometers we use, just hold it an inch or so from the forehead. Instant reading!

I love my IR thermometer and I use it all of the time.
I have an attached garage and we brought the tub of water with the water lily indoors in November. It sits near an outside wall where the overhead doors are located and today the surface of the water was frozen - INSIDE the garage!

DH said it was 19º when he got up a little after 6am. I got up just a little after 7am and it was 23º. So we did drop, but it didn't stay there long. It has stayed in the 40's today but we are supposed to be a bit warmer from now on and closer to normal for us...nights in the upper 30's & 40's and days in the upper 50's & 60's!
I don't think I could stand the cold temps ya'al are having in the north any more. I've just gotten too used to what we have down here. I can take the heat a bit better, but not that cold! My arthritis has been giving me fits the last few days with the cold we have been having here!

I try so hard not to whine about the weather, but it was 2 degrees at my house this morning. My daughter's well pump froze and cracked for the 4th time in a year. And I am just about ready to move to Arizona!!

More snow on the way for us today. In fact, it just started (8:50 a.m.). But at least the weather powers that be dropped their original prediction from 10"-12" down to 5"-8". One does have to look on the bright side.

We are expecting 5-7" as well starting mid-morning but the storm may receive an "enhancement" as it crosses the Mason Dixon line according to the weather guy.
Supposed to change to rain overnight. Hopefully it will be above freezing or we will have a really big, icy mess.

Its a balmy 31 out right now. It gave me a chance to go out and clean up after the dog. We're supposed to get snow tonight but right noe not expecting only a couple of inches.

I really hate to tell this, but....
I turned off the heat earlier, around 2 pm and opened windows. We were 69º in the shade. We have since clouded over and the temps have dropped to 65º so the windows are closed again and the heat is on but hasn't kicked in yet.
I made suet blocks earlier and since I start with lard and boil the lard with grits & oatmeal in it for 5 min....I NEEDED to open the windows. Even with the vent fan going full speed and the bathroom vents going too...it just doesn't get all that smell out. The blocks are all made and in the freezer.

After I make a few phone calls to put a contract out on gakaren, I'm going to hunt down all the weather professionals at the "Wunderground" weather site & kill them in their sleep. Their 5"-8" prediction was dropped down to 3" a few hours ago, yet I'm currently looking out at & just came in from wading through 10"-12" of white stuff that is now turning into ice-pellet-encrusted white stuff. I am so So SO very tired of this.
