There is a spot in the south part of our property where the deer are removing the dirt. Could lime or a chemical fertilizer have been spilled there? Maybe even wood ashes? Do mushrooms grow there?

binnylou , my first thought as well was salt in the soil. I suppose if you wanted to get a soil analysis, you could do that as there might be something else in there that the deer want.
Isn't is fascinating how animals can tell there's something they need, w/o having a soil analysis done as we humans would do?
If I recall correctly, I watched part of a nature documentary last night in which an animal from the deer family (antelope, maybe?) was licking something off a cliff wall b/c it needed the mineral on that wall's surface.
Not that I'd want to get salt from licking a wall, but it just fascinates me how animals can find something in nature that we have to locate, mine, and then package up for sale.

Could lime or a chemical fertilizer have been spilled there? Maybe even wood ashes? Do mushrooms grow there? That particular part of our yard was a hog lot/pasture 35 years ago. No wood ashes...no fertilizer...no mushrooms. When we moved into this area, that piece of turf was pasture and trees...mainly red elm and oak, but it was also used for hogs. Most of the original trees are gone.

The naturalized columbine all over the yard is and has been in full bloom for several weeks now... It's a particularly good year for the columbine...
The silver dollar is also just past full bloom... is all over the place this year and there are big 'seas' of shocking pink color all over...It looks really nice right now...
Greens bed is full of Little Gem, Parris Romaine, Black Seeded Simpson and Dino Kale...beets too...
I never got around to pruning back the pussy willow this year yet...It's grown to well over a story high already... Need to get out there and cut it back soon and try to time it around 'debris collection day'...
Lots of volunteers starting to come up...sunflowers, cosmos, tons of celosia, zinnias, Johnny-Jump-Ups...
I like Spring in the yard...And everything has this nice shade of fresh new green...

Found cabbage moth caterpillars munching the kale... I use Bt for such things.

I've used Bt in the past on other stuff, not DE yet...but at this point, I'm just going to handpick the caterpillars off the best I can... I got near 50 of them the other day and found less than 10 a couple days later... Right now, there's just other stuff going on and I don't have time to baby the kale...Oh well... First and last year for growing kale here I think...At least for now...No fussy veggies here...
The cabbage moth is one of the first out there flying around here in the Spring... I just knew it was going to become a problem with anything cruciferous... I did not have the floating row cover 'greenhouse' all the way down to the ground and bricked down...There was space for insects to get underneath...I knew that when I erected it but didn't care at the time and just took a chance... It's ok though...There's a lot of really nice kale untouched and plenty for my needs...
Lessons learned...
