She would then jump off into freedom Had a dog like that once. No flyin'...just climbing and jumping. Finally had to put a top on her kennel.

Lost one of the younger hens yesterday. She somehow got out of her high fenced pen and jumped into the backyard. My Husky got her. ???

Yup. Bit of a mess but not the first time I've dealt with predation. Husky was just acting on instinct.

My favorite chicken, Shoeless Joe, got caught up between the ranch fence the chicken wire I put against it. She's always been the dominate chicken even tho she's probably the smallest one. I thought at first one of the young up and comers took her on getting the best of her. She lost too many feathers and they were all along the fence. A bit worried she won't grow feathers back before the real cold weather gets here.

Do you have an area where you can give her shelter, and maybe a heat lamp to huddle under? These critters do tug at the heart strings sometimes.

I find they do grow back pretty quick. I give mine a higher protein feed when they are growing feathers. Did she just lose her outer feathers or her down ones also?

Her butt was bald, lost all of tail feathers.
The coop is totally closed in with siding so the wind doesn't blow through. I put in two louvered vents, one on each side. I cover those when it gets cold with old deer corn bags.
She has been going in the nest boxes at night so I think she'll be alright. Before her roosting spot was on the window ledge at the vent, the coldest spot, I wasn't sure she'd give up the spot.

Shoeless Joe had another entanglement with a coon which she lost this time. Darn coon got in the henhouse before I shut the door and because she didn't fly very well she stayed on the lowest perch. Evidently he didn't get his fill and managed to find the only space big enough to get in up by the rafters that I left open for ventilation. Killed and partially ate another Barred Rock then killed one of the Americana's eating only the head.
I closed off the area he got into the henhouse and set up traps. I found him in the live trap the following morning. I had given some thought to releasing him out in the state wildlife area nearby but, due to his ornery disposition he got a dirt nap instead.

I'll miss Shoeless Joe but, life goes on. Hard to believe but the local feed store now has baby chicks. I've prepared the chick coop for chicks again this year, even tho that wasn't to be in the works this year, ha. Figure I'll pick up 8 chicks next week which will make a grand total of 15 birds, back to the original number I started with 2 years ago. Nice thing about getting them so early is they will start laying by Memorial day.

deckman22, glad to hear that you are trying again. It's a real trial...trying to outsmart those rascally raccoons. Good luck with the new girls.

Thanks binnylou. The chicks will be a draw for the grandkids, for awhile anyway.

I picked up 8 chicks a few days ago, born right around first of the year. Neighbor bought 3 also & I am tending to them til they get bigger since she isn't set up for raising chicks so 11 chicks in the barn now. Not much trouble at this stage.
